    RPG Evolution: The Half-Edition Shuffle

Huh. Swapping the bonus for a reaction. Never considered that. I wonder how that would affect gameplay? It would certainly influence OA the most. Is there a feat that gives you extra reactions?

    D&D 5E (2014) Spells that have disappeared...

I agree; the 5e version of stoneskin is extremely boring.

    RPG Evolution: The Half-Edition Shuffle

I'm the DM, and we who played 3.5 still regularly say Reflex and Fortitude save! The new 5e players just roll with it; they know what we mean.

    RPG Evolution: The Half-Edition Shuffle

And I personally miss some of the 3e tropes, but not the complexity of the math. I've been playing the hell out of Wrath of the Righteous, and when you have a computer crunching all the ridiculous math and fiddly perks, it is a gloriously fun game.

    That tactic worked extremely well.

    RPG Evolution: The Half-Edition Shuffle

Someone on Enworld had posted a revised 5e feat compilation that was really well done. We have been using that a few years now. It didn't change every single feat (leaving the ones alone that are generally accepted as good and not broken, like Warcaster) but they folded many of the lesser...

    RPG Evolution: The Half-Edition Shuffle

Bonus actions need to go. That single thing is deserving of a 6e. I still to this day have players sometimes say, "I'm going to use my bonus action" to do such and such, when they don't actually have a bonus action to spend. I'd be happy with PF2 three action economy.

    RPG Evolution: The Half-Edition Shuffle

That's my concern. They'll make changes, but not enough major changes. 5e works fine as is, but if they can tune it up and improve on things after 10 years of testing driving, I'm all for that too. If all they're doing is changing some language and artwork, eh, I don't care.

D&D 5E (2014) My most basic advice for DMs who want more interesting & dynamic combat

I had a boss fight a while back with a color out of space where basically their only attacks that could hurt it were psychic and force. The party was split three ways and forced to retreat, with two people leaping from the top of a tower to escape and nearly dying upon hitting the ground.

D&D 5E (2014) My most basic advice for DMs who want more interesting & dynamic combat

One thing I have found to keep things interesting is to occasionally have a monster that is a real heavy hitter. That sudden fear of "this thing can kill me fast" overcomes any stagnancy that might evolve from standing shoulder to shoulder and whacking each other. I recently had a vampire that...

D&D 5E (2014) The Resting Mechanics - What Works Best?

Level Up also changed Tiny Hut back to more like the pre-5e version and no longer an invincible force field. It also very expensive to cast - 200gp - so would not be something done lightly by any low level party. Components: V, S, M (piece of thatched roof woven into a dome and a sculpture of...

RPG Evolution: "Why is the Tarrasque on the Table?"

I have a couple old miniatures from the Todd MacFarlane dragon line. I always intended to use it as a tarrasque if I needed it, but that never came up.

RPG Evolution: "Why is the Tarrasque on the Table?"

It's a slippery slope. We never had minis growing up, but I remember in college I started binge buying them on ebay. Then the plastic WotC minis came out, and now Wizklids is pumping out miniatures sets faster than I can keep up. But, since the pandemic I have played exclusively online, and I...

    D&D 5E (2014) Rime of the Frostmaiden Post-Mortem (Spoilers)

Yeah, I (we) are greatly enjoying it. I have heard Strahd can be a pushover, so I might have to beef him up slightly. That sunsword is brutal to undead, and the amulet of ravenkind paralyzes vamps, and they've got Van Richten in their party now. I removed Pidlwick 2 from the castle at the...

    D&D 5E (2014) Rime of the Frostmaiden Post-Mortem (Spoilers)

I'm a player in Rime now, one of the few times I ever play. It's only twice a month for a couple hours, so I imagine it will take a very, very long time to complete it. Unless the DM cuts some stuff out. I like it fine so far. In contrast, I have run Princes, Phandelver (twice), Tomb of...

D&D General Your last adventure in photos.

The 70s Salem's Lot TV movie still has the scariest vampire ever, imo.

    D&D 5E (2014) DARK SOULS' New 5E Mechanics

I agree. That was something that should have ported to 5e. I hope they bring it back somehow. If not, it needs to be a 6e inclusion.
