    D&D 5E (2014) Could a Sorcerer with a 1 Wizard dip fulfill everything unique about a wizard?

Going by the letter of the law, so to speak, you could possibly make a case for a Single classed wizard who has his spell slots somehow artificially increased being able to scribe and prepare a spell that is normally higher than his ability to cast. This, to my mind, would be contrary to the...

    D&D 5E (2014) Could a Sorcerer with a 1 Wizard dip fulfill everything unique about a wizard?

No, that's exactly the point. They can only prepare as if they were single classed, and since a single classed wizard at 1st level cannot prepare anything other than first level spells, being multiclassed and having the 2nd level spell slot doesn't alter that fact. You can, at best, upcast your...

D&D General How often do the adventures you run include a "dungeon" element?

I guess about 25% or so... There's often a dungeon present and they occur regularly, but players don't always go in. My group tends to be the traveling kind, and have more overland and wilderness adventures, with a healthy dose of in-town shennanigans than anything else.

AD&D 1E [Trying Again] B3, or how to deal with an unstructured module

I ran it for my 1e group, although I don't have the Orange cover version so I don't know the differences off hand. I kept the core set up, the Valley of Haven was protected by spirits that kept the humanoid races out, and otherwise was an isolated, idyllic community where anyone who lived there...

D&D General Common gaming clichés (and how to subvert them)

I have to say, the idea of starting in a tavern is fine as a standard. Taverns are, after all, public meeting places. I just hate when campaigns start there and no one knows each other, thus leading to some very awkward stares and bland attempts at roleplaying before being shoehorned into an...

D&D General Common gaming clichés (and how to subvert them)

Cliche (of which I wholeheartedly admit I'm guilty of playing!): Surly, scottish dwarves wielding battleaxes. Subversion: Cheerful dwarf with a lisp, wielding a frying pan.

D&D 5E (2014) Give me your strongest characters

Natural byproduct of DMing and not playing for so long, of course. :devilish:

D&D 5E (2014) Give me your strongest characters

Dov, 12th Level Human Druid (2nd Edition). Edit: ooops - forgot about my teenage years playing BECMI - had a 21st level fighter once. Been so long...

AD&D 2E [2e] Which Optional Rules do You Use?

I ran a campaign for 18 years using the Player's Options series... though I did make the mistake early on of allowing almost EVERYTHING... o_O(spoiler alert: It's a bad idea) That said, the options books do have a lot of interesting features DMs can carefully introduce. I personally love the...

D&D 5E (2014) How to keep "recall lore" checks from ruining monster mystique?

Take the 'mechanical' realities of the monsters and dress them up with flavour. So you're giving them information without revealing a statblock or abilities. 'There was once a tale of a woman by the sea... the fishermen always said to stay away, and plug your ears because she sang a song so...

D&D 5E (2014) Temple of Elemental Evil is the next Original Adventures Reincarnated

Yeah, gotta start saving my pennies. I have the other 5 in the line and am quite pleased with them. I may have to put together an actual 5e campaign to make use of them at some point, as opposed to just bookshelf curiosities.

    AD&D 1E U1 Secret of Saltmarsh: Thoughts?

I have run U1 several times for different groups. U2 only twice, and never completed the trilogy as DM. (Though as player, the DM who first put me through it ran all three and we made it to the final Enemy and died) I think it's a great series but for me the key is the setting. Create Saltmarsh...

D&D General Have You Actually Read the DM's Guide?

Add my voice to the 'almost always DM' pile, as opposed to 'sometimes.' I have read the 1st ed, 2nd ed and 5th ed DMG's from cover to cover, but I only generally review the 1st ed DMG with regularity.

D&D General How old were you when you started playing D&D?

Started with the classic Red Box at age 13 in 1986... am leveling up to age 48 in two months... What a journey indeed.

D&D General Name your favorite 4 person party composition.

I'm a sucker for the classics. Male Human Barbarian w/ Battle Axe Female Human Paladin with Chainmail, Shield, and sword Elf Fighter with bow Human Wizard Esbee needs food, badly.

    D&D 5E (2014) 'Justice' in 5E

This sounds to me like a great set-up for players to work through, you don't as DM need to have concrete answers already mapped out - this is the players' scenario to puzzle out and you need to adapt accordingly. As DM simply adjudicate the consequences of what your players choose to do without...

    AD&D 1E How/How Often Did you award XP in 1E AD&D?

Yeah, as DM I do keep the running tally, I simply don't award it until the adventure scenario is done. I use all the btb leveling rules - training at each level, performance ratings, XP freeze until you train etc... and I have found that waiting on the awarding of XP is preferable rather than...

    AD&D 1E How/How Often Did you award XP in 1E AD&D?

Well, that approach is by the book, so I imagine it was used by people somewhere, though back in the day even my own groups did it at the end of each session. I came to appreciate this way as being superior and easier for various reasons. I am not a fan of interjecting to players how they divvy...

    AD&D 1E How/How Often Did you award XP in 1E AD&D?

I still run 1e, and my method is to award XP when a scenario is done and the characters are safely back at a port of haven where they can tabulate rewards and treasure, regardless of how many sessions it takes. That gives players the chance to discuss loot division, which will affect how much...
