Burning Questions: How Do You Deal With Ludicrous Players?

On this note, we ran a Galavant inspired campaign after the first season (link included in case people weren't aware of it). It's a musical tv series set in a fantasy genre that absolutely cracked us up. No one was allowed to play an actual 'Bard' in that we were all musically inclined and...

Burning Questions: How Do You Deal With Ludicrous Players?

It's all about intent. The player who, not because of his or her character, but because of their own obnoxiousness, tries to intentionally go against the flow of the adventure and story, and even their fellow party members, is a bad egg. This needs to be addressed. So this 'bad egg' decides...

Worlds of Design: Tabletop RPGs Are the Most Naturally Co-operative Games

I like your comparison between alignments and cooperation many times being at odds, @lewpuls - it is often the case unless the campaign specifically revolves around the idea that evil and good must somehow work together for a greater goal. Lawful Good and Lawful Evil both want the world to...

5e GMs - Why or Why Not Wandering Treasure?

I like your terminology for this - "wandering treasure" - and yes, I use it sparingly. I much prefer magic items to help tell a story that relates to a character as opposed to its own story, unless I'm going to be doling out an artifact or sentient magical item, in which it having its own...

News Digest: Evil Hat Scales Back Release Schedule, D&D Errata Announced, Star Trek Adventures: DS9,

It seems AL is the reason it matters for a lot of people. My group uses a version we all chipped in and created based off of the UA version ourselves (we obviously don't play AL). When we start a new campaign, we typically make a lot of new variants for the classes or structures to the classes...

    Need a system recommendation

I backed the original Numenera in kickstarter, from which the Cypher system derived; incredibly fast play, narrative heavy - would also fit your criteria quite well. So seconding Reynard's recommendation (excepting my own previous).

Ravnica Update: Focus on Five Guilds

Thanks for another update, Charles Dunwoody The more I read, the more eager I am for this setting. My group had a ton of fun with Monte Cook's Ptolus years back, and this is going to play right into that level of depth I feel.

News Digest: Evil Hat Scales Back Release Schedule, D&D Errata Announced, Star Trek Adventures: DS9,

https://twitter.com/jeremyecrawford/status/1023352291837935616?lang=en Pretty much. Whether it actually didn't score well (the revision), or it's just too complicated to change them out, looks like the revision, or any revision, just won't be happening.

Roll20 users; are my impressions right or wrong on this

But I was playing Devil's Advocate. "I'm a humanist. Maybe the last humanist." More specifically, a previous post had declared that in 40 years of gaming, they had never seen girls excluded being for the reason of 'safe space', thus I was playing devil's advocate - it was a 'less accepted'...

Roll20 users; are my impressions right or wrong on this

Don't get me wrong, we never had that whole 'girls are bad' thing going on in my gaming group, we were quite diverse with who played - so I was merely stating what I had observed. Lots of the 'nerdy' guys really were picked on by the ladies from my observations when I was growing up, so I can...

Roll20 users; are my impressions right or wrong on this

For the sake of devil's advocate, and only for that reason, yes - "safe space" was a reason for "boys" to keep "girls" out of their nerdy interests. Now to graduate that to "men" and "women" is an entirely different question entirely. There is a maturity question to analyze, obviously. It...

    5e damaging magic items.

Using this rule for 'guiding' a magic item that would conceivably take concentration, like a flying device, is brilliant. That is very well thought out, and greatly levels the playing field. I will be using this method myself for my 5E games in the future - thank you.

    Drinking Problem

The first time I tried a Long Island at a restaurant, the menu didn't explain it didn't actually have tea, they used cola and only called it that because of the coloration - I was quite disappointed. I only later discovered the -actual- tea version was just an ill-oft used variant. The lessons...

Tell Me About Your Experiences with Theater of the Mind 5E

We use a combination of tangible maps/minis as well as theater of the mind, it all depends on the situation, mood, tension level, and the way the scene goes down. The more challenging the fight, the more likely it is that I'll have an elaborate map because I want my players to have environment...

    Drinking Problem

Thank you, Ralif Redhammer - I'll have to try one of those soon - probably the Hot Buttered Rum (gold rum variant); I've always preferred gold to dark there, sounds like it'd go better with lemon anyway, for my tastes.
