OSR Red Box, but like modern I guess?!?!?

If you want all the old school stuff with the modern ways of doing things.... Just play 5e with these limits: Humans - can be Fighters, Clerics, Rogues, or Wizards. 1/2lings - can only be Fighters Dwarfs - can only be Fighters Elves - can only be be MC Fighter/Wizards. They must meet the MC...

D&D 5E (2014) Overpowered Items and GM Expectations

Well, before you go handing out that Deck of Many Things, you should take some time & consider how you're going to deal with each card/effect.

    D&D and the rising pandemic

Yep. Food wise I'm good for 4-6 months. Here in Nov/Dec I've been quietly stocking up my pantry & filling an industrial size freezer And this coming week I'll be laying in the usual years worth of dry goods - the toilet paper, laundry soap, etc etc etc. (I HATE shopping for this stuff...

    Dragonlance Dragonlance or Mystara?

Well sure, Kender are "there". In the background somewhere. But "there" =/= where ever your adventures are taking place.

    Dragonlance Dragonlance or Mystara?

Actually no Kender is a dirt simple change(?). You just tell the players that Kender are not PC option for this campaign. And then you never introduce anything to do with kender as the DM.... Voila, no Kender! :) Oh, and there's nothing that says there are no Tortles on Krynn.

    Dragonlance Dragonlance or Mystara?

If I had to choose between the two? I'd use Mystara. Its generic D&D (even more so than FR/GH) with no real grand plot/story involved. I can easily run anything in it & ignore/alter whatever bits I please. And no players in my circles are at all familiar with it. DL? Sure, I can run just...

    D&D 5E (2014) CoS: Blood Spear OP?

Well, as others have pointed out, there is that rule about how Temp HP works. BUT: Even if WoTC 101% fully intended the thing to work in some insane way? And told you in person? The final check & balance is.....

D&D General What Do These People Eat?

There's a tribe/clan of orcs in my games who regard gnome as a delicacy. They wipe out the local gnome population wherever they go. For sure, gnome isn't the only thing in thier diet. But when its available.... :) This began as a player supplied character background detail for one of their...

    OD&D [BX/RC] Rolls of 20 and 1?

No. At the time we played the most B/X the idea of crits (+/-) hadn't occurred to us. Later on, as we played 1e with others, read Dragon magazine, our B/X games aged into Companion lvs, we began playing other stuff, we came across all kinds of crit systems & crazy % charts (ex; Role Master)...

    D&D and the rising pandemic

I could make that work. I have a big old Victorian era farmhouse (and the farm to go with it) My living room (everything just left of the ugly double storm doors) is bigger than some people entire apartments. We could easily be 6+ ft away from each other. My place is not at all the most...

D&D 5E (2014) How to play DnD 5e for Free

How to play D&D for free: Idea #1: You accept a thumb drive from your buddy & don't ask or wonder how he filled it. Idea #2: It's Dec.18th as I type this. In 7 days there this major holiday where people exchange gifts. You drop hints that you need books xyz + dice. Or a gift card to some...

D&D 5E (2014) The Fall Of The Dwarves: What Races Do People Actually Play?

Most often that one for me. Sometimes it's "Haven't played this before" or "I just painted up this cool mini". My only Dragonborn was a joke - Gorgira, the fire breathing green dragonborn. Stomping about & burnanating things.

D&D General D&D as a Curated, DIY Game or "By the Book": Examining DM and Player Agency, and the DM as Game Designer

Pointless debates. Ages ago 11 year old me was told in the opening pages of my Basic book by the games creators that even though these were the "rules", they couldn't cover everything. So I was expected to alter things. To add things. That I could even change what was written. I was...

D&D General Collaboration With Your Players?

I'll go with frequently. Most often the players are free to add nearly anything to the world. The more creative/interesting/personal the better & more likely it'll stick. Sometimes even if it really does contradict something else. Sometimes though the players will run into stuff that's...

How to Tell a GM You're Not Having Fun?

We avoided blowing up the party by bringing pack mules into the dungeons. :) A great # of mules have been burnt, crushed, chopped, exploded, dissolved, ambushed, vanished, & worse. And even though the people I played those early games are long gone, mule bones occasionally turn up in dungeons I...
