D&D 5E (2014) Witchlight publishes the new official format for player character races.

When I started in 3e, high elves were just people who could see a little better in moonlight. They lived in the woods, in the same way a human lives in the woods, and in human cities. They were just alternate humans. When 4e came out, high elves got dropped for eladrin and their base type...

    D&D 5E (2014) Preview Witchlight's New Rabbit People

I don't like giving out spells as racial features for flavor/build reasons and the fairy highlights one of the mechanical reasons why I don't like them. I want less pigeonholing in my races, not more.

    D&D 5E (2014) Preview Witchlight's New Rabbit People

Not being keyed off of Dex was only my last pont. It's certain good for Dex classes, but casters aren't exactly dex builds and rogues aren't going to need the hop, so I guess an archer might be the only high Dex build that really gets full of mileage out of it. On the other hand, ignoring OAs to...

    D&D 5E (2014) Preview Witchlight's New Rabbit People

Actually, you get the exact same mileage out of the low Dex harengon as a high Dex one, which is why I feel like they're well designed. Hare-trigger. If you have low dex, you can still get an amazing initiative roll bonus. +6 to initiative on a Dex 10 character is great. Leoprine senses. Not...

    D&D 5E (2014) Preview Witchlight's New Rabbit People

A warforged is a humanoid with the construct type in the same way that a toaster is a shoe box of the electrical type. They're technically the same shape but they're conceptually different on a fundamental level.

    D&D 5E (2014) Preview Witchlight's New Rabbit People

I'm all for getting rid of dwarves, elves, and halflings, and rolling them into the human stat block. You get to choose beard, pointed ears, or shortness as a racial feature. This would leave more room for things that are actually different like warforged or myconids.

I'm just reading the room. I'll be shocked if I see a harengon that looks like the official art.

    D&D 5E (2014) Preview Witchlight's New Rabbit People

When I first saw a rabbit race in the UA, my first though was how many anime girls we're about to see.

D&D 5E (2014) Witchlight publishes the new official format for player character races.

I don't have any ideas that I'm really thrilled with. I strongly dislike racial design that just adds number buffs to make one character's math problem outdo another character's math problem instead of adding qualitative narrative or gameplay options. The idea of large characters seems great but...

D&D 5E (2014) How does “optimization” change the game?

People always come to these kind of discussions with loaded definitions of "optimizer" that vary from everyone else in the discussion. You'll have 10 people arguing past each other from 10 different versions of "optimization." I cut my teeth on 3.5 when it came out and it was designed out of...

I've never like elves but when eladrin became a PC option in 4e, they finally seemed cool because they were legitimate fey instead of just humans in the woods.

D&D 5E (2014) Witchlight publishes the new official format for player character races.

In theory, I like the idea of large PC races options. The thing i generally don't like is when the mechanics of a race just make it hands-down superior to all other race options for common set-ups. 4e had a great design philosophy for races. Back then, the idea was that racial powers should be...

D&D 5E (2014) How broken is tunneling speed?

I think that making it take an action is a decent idea but most of the stuff like prone, disadvantage on saves, etc, seems extraneous since you have total cover anyway. I'd word it something like: "Burrowing: As an action, you can move through the sand, earth, and snow with a burrow speed equal...

D&D 5E (2014) How broken is tunneling speed?

The big issue that I'm trying to tamp down is OP combos. The druid wildshape is fairly combo-proof in 5e because it shuts off every other racial or class power when it's active, so you don't have greatsword paladin badgers with cunning action popping in and out of the ground with smites (or...

    D&D 5E (2014) Check out Witchlight's Table of Contents

I have a feeling I'm about to see more than a few anime rabbit girl rogues/ninjas after harengons come out. Not hating it though.

As both a player and a DM I feel like the flexibility is all upside with no downside. I remember getting into an argument on reddit with some folks who felt that letting elves take a +2 to Str during character creation took worldbuilding power out of the DM's hands and ruined settings. It blew...

I loved the flavor of the daelkyr half-blood in 3.5 and just getting something like aberration as a creature type does a lot for me, conceptually.

D&D 5E (2014) How broken is tunneling speed?

What I'm working on is rebooting of some of the magic of incarnum classes with real-world terminology - I.E. chakra magic instead of incarnum, manifestations instead of soulmelds. I'm beginning with one of my favorite classes, the totemist, which has the ability to channel the disembodied soul...

D&D 5E (2014) Witchlight publishes the new official format for player character races.

I'm not a fan of the fairy stats for multiple reasons but I feel like the variable ability score bonuses and general flexibility of the new PC building is a huge step forward. Creatures type, for instance, doesn't have a lot of mechanical weight outside of a few spells like hold person, and yet...
