D&D 5E (2014) [CAMPAIGN] Out of the Abyss [SPOILERS]

The Spiral of the Horned King The PCs entered The Spiral of the Horned King. They found the maze more difficult than usual to navigate. It required the extraordinary ranger skills of Jharzzle to continue moving in one direction due to the direction sense warping effects of the maze. They...

    D&D 5E (2014) I Told Ya So 2014!! (or not)

The math has been done. It's been proven that Sharpshooter and Great Weapon Fighter used intelligently far exceed the damage of those without the feats. What usually gets done wrong is comparing guy using vanilla attack to guy using Sharpshooter all the time. They always forget that Sharpshooter...

    D&D 5E (2014) I Told Ya So 2014!! (or not)

Wait a minute. What am I doing? We've discussed this topic to death. Must stop responding.

    D&D 5E (2014) Design Debate: 13th-level PCs vs. 6- to 8-Encounter Adventuring Day

The bat lands on your shoulder and nuzzles you. It makes little bat sounds in your ear. Does that stop you from sending it to scout?

    D&D 5E (2014) Design Debate: 13th-level PCs vs. 6- to 8-Encounter Adventuring Day

I've been analyzing that final encounter. It's an extremely hard win that would require some luck. The dragon has too many advantages. It has a sight advantage on everyone but one character. It has a time advantage due to the counting clock, so you can't wait it out. If I were running it, the...

    D&D 5E (2014) Design Debate: 13th-level PCs vs. 6- to 8-Encounter Adventuring Day

If it doesn't come back, it's dead or something has it. You give it a command to come back and let you know what it finds. You can telepathy with it when it returns. Either way it gives you some kind of warning. It's the main use of the spell at high level. Scouting or delivering one touch spell...

    D&D 5E (2014) Design Debate: 13th-level PCs vs. 6- to 8-Encounter Adventuring Day

Besides the environment you made up. That is a house rule. Except for the environment. It's a 9th level effect you made up. It's not from the books as near as I can tell. More insults. Always fun when a guy attempts to come off as polite, but has been tossing insults nearly the entire time...

    D&D 5E (2014) Design Debate: 13th-level PCs vs. 6- to 8-Encounter Adventuring Day

I use my familiar as I wish. I would never play with a DM that tried to impose limitations on a spell that is already nearly useless. D&D is a game. Even if you wanted to discuss non-gamist thinking, it would be very apparent a familiar that couldn't survive adventuring is nearly useless and...

    D&D 5E (2014) Design Debate: 13th-level PCs vs. 6- to 8-Encounter Adventuring Day

I can't speculate on the resources. They would be depleted by at least half I would think depending on how many encounters ended in fights. I might actually run this at some point with my actual group just to see how things go. I can't do it with the current group because their magic items and...

    D&D 5E (2014) Design Debate: 13th-level PCs vs. 6- to 8-Encounter Adventuring Day

Hahahaha. That was a good one. A master of magic that understands the familiar isn't killed. One that knows it is a spirit summoned at his beck and call for his survival. He can summon little cute bat back soon enough. This isn't 3E where familiars have some survivability and you want to keep...

    D&D 5E (2014) Design Debate: 13th-level PCs vs. 6- to 8-Encounter Adventuring Day

My tactics change when I'm not teleported into a bad situation surrounded by bad guys or have to walk through a portal with unknown enemies on the other side. Once we're in an area where we can move around, then we start staggered scouting like most groups I imagine. We use a point man and heavy...

    D&D 5E (2014) Design Debate: 13th-level PCs vs. 6- to 8-Encounter Adventuring Day

By the rules if the PCs have sufficient cover, Stealth works against blindsight. So it is a large pyramid. That's why my group likes things drawn out, so they understand the terrain which can sometimes be different in the DMs and players minds and affect play in a manner that leads to...

    D&D 5E (2014) Design Debate: 13th-level PCs vs. 6- to 8-Encounter Adventuring Day

But we're not concerned with it seeing the bat. We're only concerned with detecting enemies. If it dies, then we know an enemy is present and can react accordingly.

    D&D 5E (2014) Design Debate: 13th-level PCs vs. 6- to 8-Encounter Adventuring Day

So looking at that the dragon doesn't have cover. He's hiding in obscurement (the dim light). You could send in your bat familiar to scout the room with his 60 foot blindsight and detect the dragon. He would have to breach his cover to kill it likely using a lair action or something similar. I...

    D&D 5E (2014) Design Debate: 13th-level PCs vs. 6- to 8-Encounter Adventuring Day

Pyramid in the middle? Or near the back? Do you remember how high the room was? I'm assuming it was like some wide open demiplane with thematically cool pyramid in the middle of a dark, shadowy plane of limitless inky sky.

    D&D 5E (2014) Design Debate: 13th-level PCs vs. 6- to 8-Encounter Adventuring Day

What were the dimensions of the final room? I never did see. This would be an interesting ruling. Pass Without Trace has all the limitations of Stealth. But Stealth does work against Blindisight as clarified by Jeremy Crawford the rules guy as long as the PCs have cover against the creature...

D&D 5E (2014) The Intent of the Forbiddance Spell

And it's dispellable. So any class or monster with dispel magic has a chance to get rid of it. And some of them will get rid of it automatically. Don't want something like that to cost too much or no one would use it.

    D&D 5E (2014) Design Debate: 13th-level PCs vs. 6- to 8-Encounter Adventuring Day

It's been confirmed that dragon breath weapons are not magical. So any defense that halves magical damage is ineffective against dragon breath weapons. Oath of Ancients Paladin aura should not work against a dragon-equivalent breath weapon even if it worked against magical effects. Good job...
