I tend to align with 1. Not much more to add, just thought it was interesting and worth mentioning.

The player is separate from the player character though and the player is one thing I intend to be included. I’m open to other players. I’m not sure what references and separated cognitive processes are?

In this context it would be external to the player. So DM or System produced. For some meanings of diegetic that might count. I don't think diegetic is doing a great job of communicating this concept since film uses it to talk about things that would be the equivalent of outside the fiction...

D&D General Barbarian - Best Damage

Here's a few example characters. One Hand Weapon and Shield Zealot Barbarian. Zealot keeps your damage high. The extra AC means you can reckless attack more often, which will feel better early IMO. Later on if you find a really good 2 handed weapon you can use it and drop the shield, at that...

Where is this notion of breaking the game coming from? My notion is that such instances here was only that they were not simulationist and that I dislike the mechanic for that reason. Also, thanks for another great example. I've said before that simulation is about intent. That we could...

I speak more to the specific mechanics in dispute. Depending on how often and fundamental those mechanics come up would depend on how simulationist I think it is. I don't know the game well enough to answer that. The point of noting this is? Are you wanting to pit me against them? Are you...

D&D General Barbarian - Best Damage

Best Damage is basically Great Weapon Master + Polearm Master and Max Strength. Be the Zealot subclass. That said, I'd highly encourage you to consider more than just damage. Mobility, Survivability and Saving Throws (especially Wisdom ones) are really going to impact your ability to dish out...

For the 777,777th time, there is nothing wrong with playing other ways. Everyone here has repeatedly said that.

Itch.io is shadowbanning or deleting NSFW and LGBTQ content

IMO it’s going to take a bit for companies to straighten out what the line is between sfw and nsfw especially in light of far reaching terms of service changes. I’m confident in the long term you aren’t going to see bans just because of a gay character being in a work. Though in the short term I...

Itch.io is shadowbanning or deleting NSFW and LGBTQ content

I’m really happy to this sentiment expressed so strongly by so many here. It wasn’t all that long ago the banks and credit card companies were being politically pressured to refuse to process payments for guns. I’m for if the item is legal the payment processors must stay neutral toward its...

Itch.io is shadowbanning or deleting NSFW and LGBTQ content

There have been numerous examples of explicit gay sexual content slip into school libraries. Most of it couldn’t even be read in the meetings or on TV as it was to explicit for those avenues. So please don’t lump the people against just that with people against a gay character.

I disagree. We don’t extend electric companies the courtesy of not doing business with anyone because of their beliefs. Credit Card companies and processors should be similar today.

Right. Kind of lends credence to the notion that diegetic isnt really the best word to describe both scenarios. Yes but it’s more than that as any mechanic that allows authoring can be viewed as doing what you describe. There’s the real world, the fictional world and the map of meaning...

Why? D&D shares many similar features to those games. What makes them simulationist but d&d not? The answers thus far have been extremely unconvincing. Like not using hp was once cited but some of those games do use hp…. So what’s common to all of them that makes them simulationist, but that...

mediated via mechanics seems to be doing the heavy lifting here. It would include mechanics telling the dm to decide it even the players to decide.

I don’t think Burning Wheel is a great example because to my recollection the only mechanic I’ve seen listed problematic in it is using circles to fix the location of things like Evards Black Tower as here and now. That was a Burning Wheel example, right? I don’t think it’s worth hashing out...

IMO, in relation to simulation, diegetic would seem to entail all stimulative mechanics/processes. Those outside the purview of the simulation would not be diegetic. Those in it would be.
