D&D 5E (2024) 2025's Ancient Green Dragon Stat Block From The New Monster Manual

Yes, it does. From the DMG: "When calculating a monster's damage output, also account for special off-turn damage-dealing features, such as auras, reactions, legendary actions, or lair actions." It is a reasonable assumption that, given a party of 4 PCs, that at least 3 of them will damage the...

What is a "Light" RPG? What is a "Crunchy" RPG?

A game is lighter the more of the following qualities it has: -Low Page count -Few/no mechanical character features, spells, or powers -Focus on "freeform" or "write-in" features -Single, Unified resolution system -No modifiers, chart lookup, or math done with rolls -No/few procedures and no...

D&D 5E (2024) 2025's Ancient Green Dragon Stat Block From The New Monster Manual

The Original Ancient Green calculated out to be effectively CR 23 (Which is normal for dragons - their actual CR is usually 1 less than their printed CR so that fights against them are harder than expected). This one calculates out to CR 25.

D&D General Hot Take: Dungeon Exploration Requires Light Rules To Be Fun

Outside of maybe my first 1-2 sessions where everyone at the table was learning the rules, I've not had this happen at all in pathfinder during exploration. The rules are very simple, straightforward, and easy to apply. It takes maybe 20 seconds to look something up and resolve as needed.

D&D General Hot Take: Dungeon Exploration Requires Light Rules To Be Fun

    As you've said yourself - that's not a 5e-specific mechanic.

D&D General Hot Take: Dungeon Exploration Requires Light Rules To Be Fun

Shadowdark is not based on 5e. The only mechanic it takes directly from 5e is the Adv/Disadv system.

D&D General Hot Take: Dungeon Exploration Requires Light Rules To Be Fun

AD&D is a rules heavy, crunchy game. So is BECMI - see Weapon Mastery, the class/prestige class system, etc. B/X is Rules Medium, at best. I'd argue its also rules heavy. Into the Odd is Rules Light - the rules are like 2 pages. Lasers and Feelings is rules lite. Honey heist is rules...

D&D General Hot Take: Dungeon Exploration Requires Light Rules To Be Fun

Exploration in PF2 is extremely fast, I don't understand what you're talking about.

We should start calling it D&D Next

    Reinventing the Wheel

More people have played exclusively d&d and decided to try to fix things they dont like than have ever played anything indie. Someone doesn't, say, go to Fate Core to find an alternative initiative system because they've often literally never heard of it or any other indie ttrpgs. They only...

    D&D 5E (2024) D&D species article

Adv on saves vs poison, poison resistance, (4) Weapon Proficiencies, Artisan Tool Proficiency, Stonecunning expertise, and the mountain dwarf subrace. In exchange they get tremorsense that only works in a niche situation.

    D&D 5E (2024) D&D species article

They didn't put it in the PHB. Nothing in the DMG should be assumed baseline. Removing custom backgrounds was a deliberate design decision.

Also shout out to Dwarves for literally losing half of their racial features in onednd. They're getting gutted.

D&D 5E (2024) How many of you would implement the drop to 0 HP, get 1 level of exhaustion house rule?

I think spellcasters should get one less spell slot per level, and spells (and spell like abilities) should again provoke attacks of opportunity.

    D&D 5E (2024) D&D species article

I don't think a DM choosing not to use an optional rule in the DMG should be considered a red flag. With custom backgrounds being moved to the DMG, they should no longer be the expected default from players, just like players shouldn't expect the DM will use flanking rules or the Honor Ability...

D&D 5E (2024) What is your oppinion of 5.24 so far?

I am operating under the assumption that wotc is not hopelessly incompetent about designing from survey results after doing so successfully for a literal decade. I am confident that onednd will satisfy the vast majority of players and at least be 'OK' for anyone who doesn't absolutely love it...
