    D&D 5E (2014) The Magical Martial

They should cap Martials at level 10 and limit 20 level progression to spellcasters.

    D&D 5E (2014) The Magical Martial

The problem comes from bounded accuracy. A Martial can be a demigod in combat because of HP and damage growths, but since their d20 rolls don't grow in the same way, their out-of-combat abilities don't meaningfully improve. They can 1v1 a giant but can't lift a boulder.

D&D 5E (2014) What are you looking forward to more Vecna: Eve of Ruin or Quests from the Infinite Staircase

Neither. Wotc's 5e adventures are typically incoherent crap or uninspired rehashes of better, older content. Or both.

D&D 5E (2024) How excited are you for the new 2024 edition d&d?

    1. I don't have enough issues with 5e to justify re-buying the corebooks.

Worlds of Design: The Problem with Magimarts

Yep. D&D 3rd and its descendants of 3.5, 4e, Pathfinder 1, and Pathfinder 2 assume that magic items are common and easily accessible, and incorporate into their math the assumption that players will have certain amounts of certain objects at a given level. Monster stats and DCs will...

OSR What's the best introductory BX/OSR scenario for new players and DMs?

There's sooooo many good ""modern"" OSR adventures - all the OSE adventures, Brad Kerr's stuff, the massive trove of Basic Fantasy adventures, the dungeons in Delver magazine...

    D&D 5E (2014) So what's the scoop on D&D in PDF Format?

It's really tragic that there's no legitimate way to purchase Star Wars Saga or d20 stuff. People sitting on licenses or creative content and doing nothing with them infuriates me.

OSR What's the best introductory BX/OSR scenario for new players and DMs?

r/osr is pretty actively hostile and honestly too intense for me as a non-newcomer.

OSR What's the best introductory BX/OSR scenario for new players and DMs?

The main thing which is accessible to newcomers on the OSR theory side of things are the trio of Primers - Principia Apochrypha, Matt Finch's Primer, and Chris Gonnermann's Primer. Again - still reasonably obscure to find those. But the Primers are still not really enough context on their own...

    D&D 5E (2014) So what's the scoop on D&D in PDF Format?

That is what I was referring to, yes.

OSR What's the best introductory BX/OSR scenario for new players and DMs?

I think its something to that effect. Since so much of OSR theory/discussion is either scattered in blogs or lost to G+, a lot of new players are getting into the games and going through the same cycles when the games grate against their expectations. "Solved" problems aren't solved if no...

    D&D 5E (2014) So what's the scoop on D&D in PDF Format?

Because locking a game behind DRM and preventing users from archiving the things they have purchased for personal use is both an anti-consumer practice and hostile to the historical preservation of RPGs as an art form.

    D&D 5E (2014) People don't read the 5E DMG for a reason

Yes, the combat attrition system only counts combat, that's the point. A Deadly encounter uses approximately 1/3 of the daily XP budget. A single encounter cannot use the entire daily value unless it is massively overloaded.

    D&D 5E (2014) People don't read the 5E DMG for a reason

The DMG does have a solid explanation of what an adventuring day looks like - using the entire XP budget of your party before the get a long rest. This can be done as a combination of encounters of various difficulties.

    D&D 5E (2014) People don't read the 5E DMG for a reason

I don't know if they really can at this point. They've been Band-Aid fixing it for a while now by changing Short Rest features into PB-Per-Long Rest features instead so more classes can nova harder, but that still doesn't solve the problem. Ultimately 5e at its core is an Attrition game and...

    D&D 5E (2014) People don't read the 5E DMG for a reason

I think its pretty clear that the main goal of 5.5 is "revitalize sales" and the chance to fix some problems and improve low-satisfaction elements is just a nice bonus.

OSR What's the best introductory BX/OSR scenario for new players and DMs?

I think a very experienced GM with a lot of free time could turn B2 into an incredible experience. A beginner is likely to either get frustrated and quit, or completely ignore the rules of the game they're learning in favor of just fudging everything to keep the party alive after the third or...

OSR What's the best introductory BX/OSR scenario for new players and DMs?

KotB is really good if you have around a dozen players. Less than that, they'll constantly get slaughtered by the always-hostile demihuman gank squads in every single cave. A fun keep on the borderlands drinking game is to take a drink every time a room description indicates that the creatures...
