WotC 5E Designer Mike Mearls Talks About The OGL Crisis

kobold press is using ORC Most publishers not directly writing 5e material have moved to ORC, their own bespoke license, or a CC license, as far as I've seen.

    D&D 5E (2024) Why No Monster Creation Rules in D&D 2024?

For a new player who will be buying the new edition, you cannot expect them to look at a previous edition for how to play the game. 2024 should have been feature complete and standalone, not relying on prior edition material or blog posts for basic information like "what stats should a monster...

How the Monsters Have Changed in the 2025 Monster Manual: Aarakocra

Text from the prior edition of the game is irrelvant to a conversation about the current edition.

    D&D 5E (2024) Why No Monster Creation Rules in D&D 2024?

My guess is that wotc doesnt want to do work they know youtubers, bloggers, and 3pps will do for them.

    D&D 5E (2024) 5e 2024 − The Monster Math

This is incorrect. Look at the ranges of XP values that Easy, Medium, and Hard encounters cover in 2014 vs 2024. They are nearly identical. Don't think of difficulty as singular values. As an example, for a party of (4) 3rd level characters: In 2014, a medium encounter is 600 - 899 XP. In...

    D&D 5E (2024) 5e 2024 − The Monster Math

I kept that in mind with my example. (8) CR1 direwolves vs (4) 3rd level PCs is a Hard encounter which still has no more than 2 monsters per PC.

    D&D 5E (2024) 5e 2024 − The Monster Math

Agree with this take entirely - aside from the group size multiplier, the only places where 5.5e encounter math significantly differs from 5e's is in the areas where people already recognize that 2014's math starts to break down: high level play. I am very worried about the removal of the...

D&D Adds Two New Books to 2025 Slate, Including New Eberron Book

Odds of eberron book containing any new lore/setting stuff or it just being a stripped down version of Rising from the Last War, with maybe more character options?

    D&D 3.x Still playing 3e? Share your 3.0 and/or 3.5 house rules

I've been considering running original 3.0 at some point soon. Current list is limiting character creation to PHB+1, and significantly limiting access to prestige classes.

    D&D 5E (2014) Don't Throw 5e Away Because of Hasbro

Copyright law in the united states does not cover personal use as a specific exception. That said, if you do not distribute whatever you make there is not any practical risk in doing so.

Pathfinder Announces New Lost Omens Book, Plus Remastered Version of Treasure Vault

They should update the PDFs for free at least, like they are with G&G.

    D&D 5E (2014) I think I prefer backgrounds in 2014

"Custom Backgrounds are the default, unless your GM bans them." and "Your GM can allow you to make a custom background, as an optional rule" are very different positions.

    D&D 5E (2014) I think I prefer backgrounds in 2014

Giving up a first level feat is a huge opportunity cost. In my examples - Tavern Brawler and Savage Attacker offer literally nothing to the paired classes, in addition to not offering a key ability score boost.

    D&D 5E (2014) I think I prefer backgrounds in 2014

Backgrounds previously were a low-impact RP feature - given that they consisted primarily of Ribbon abilities and could be fully customized as a baseline rule. One or two tool proficiencies and a background feature isn't going to make or break a character. Now they've got baked in optimization...

ToV Tales of the Valiant Starter Set

I don't think there's very much overlap between "informed enough about WOTC to want to avoid buying their products", "Specifically wants to play 5th edition d&d", and "has never played a ttrpg before". I'm not saying nobody but WOTC should make starter sets, just that it doesn't make sense for...

ToV Tales of the Valiant Starter Set

I highly doubt anyone is going to get into ToV as their first RPG. It was designed specifically to poach the existing 5e fanbase. Maybe KP is more optimistic about it than I am.

ToV Tales of the Valiant Starter Set

I'm not sure who this product is made for? Starter sets exist to onboard and teach new players+gms your game in a more approachable format. Anyone getting into Tales of the Valiant has played 5e, and ToV is basically the same game.

    Tell your overdue Kickstarter story

I don't think LFOSR is taking new orders. Everything on their shop has been marked as "sold out" for a long time. He basically dropped out of contact with everyone he was collabing with. I don't know of any projects in the past 2 years he was involved in.

OSR OSR game with more dangerous magic

Errant will have you covered. Can't get much more unreliable than the Zealot, who has a non-trivial chance of either instantly killing themselves they use a spell, or their target if they try to heal them. It wouldn't be a bad choice in Errant to try to heal your enemies and hope they randomly...
