    D&D 5E (2014) Help with kids game…

This sounds like a 400 XP encounter, assuming three zombies, so it's a medium difficulty encounter and well within the daily budget for a party of four 3rd-level characters. Depending on how fresh they are, they should be fine.

D&D 5E (2014) Moving out of an enemy creature's space

Yes, moving out is allowed. Conceptually, moving through a space is entering that space, so entering a space with difficult terrain costs two spaces of speed whereas entering a normal space only costs one.

AD&D 1E What was the reason for Demihuman level and class limits in AD&D?

My feeling about the class and level limitations, which go back to OD&D, is they're intended to promote a narrative in which demihumans are in a supportive role as avuncular tutors and helpers to humans who are the main heroes. Gimli and Legolas to Aragorn being an example from fiction. Beleg to...

    D&D 5E (2014) Reducing Power Gaming

Narrating the effects of PC failure is something I enjoy doing when I DM. However, I don't try for a farcical tone in my games. For ability checks, a failure result is going to follow from the established fiction which has put something at stake leading up to the roll. For failed attack rolls, I...

    D&D 5E (2014) Reducing Power Gaming

Powergaming is just a technique your players are using to make their characters and themselves more effective in what's seen as a competitive arena (the game). It can lead to dysfunction if everyone isn't on board. If that's not what you're into, tell your players you want a game that's more...

D&D General Muscular Neutrality (thought experiment)

I'm not sure what you mean by "metaphysically valid", so I'm not sure if my response would count as refusing the premise, but I think it would be valid or reasonable, even justified, for the muscular neutrals to not believe/trust/have faith that "good" will result from the triumph of good and...

AD&D 1E Determining Mercenary/Hireling HPs for Castle Guard and Ship crew.

The DMG, p 30, under "Mercenary Soldier:", states, "regular soldiers are 0 level men-at-arms with 4-7 hit points each." This subsumes any Constitution bonus to hit points (the range for normal men being 1-6 hp), so you don't need Constitution scores for these characters and can simply assign an...

    TSR Level Titles

When I read Chainmail, from which many of the magic-user and some of the fighter level titles derive, I realized their significance is they denote a type of figure that encompasses certain fighting and or spellcasting capabilities on the battlefield. For instance, your 11th-level magic-user is...

    The 1966 Hobbit cartoon

I like how they left it open for a sequel at the end.

    The 1966 Hobbit cartoon

Another thought, in this version, Gandalf lives in a tower and is looking for the One Ring. It seems like they had decided to conflate him with Saruman.

D&D General The History of Alignment: Why D&D Has the Nine-Point Alignment System 4 UR Memes

The OP seems to have skipped over the apparent use of five-point alignment (with the very few exceptions which use parentheticals) in the Monster Manual (1977). This would seem to complicate the idea of the SR article as a straight forward presentation of nine-point alignment.

D&D General Folks Who Came Back With 5E: Did You Stay with 5E?

I played Holmes Basic and AD&D 1E in the early 80's. I continued playing a few non-D&D RPGs from the mid 80's to the late 90's (Villains and Vigilantes and MERP are the ones I remember by name), but by the end of the 20th century, I'd completely stopped RPGing for a while. I wasn't drawn back...

    AD&D 1E Old Timers: Remember G1-2-3, D1-D2, D3, and Q1?

I think "Tea Bag Duck" has a nice ring to it. As for a title for the whole thing, maybe something like "The Mystery of the Cult of the Golden Eye"?

    AD&D 1E Old Timers: Remember G1-2-3, D1-D2, D3, and Q1?

My personal version of the "Grand Campaign" would be to play the following, which works out to about one module per level: T1 B1-2 A1-2-3-4 G1-2-3 D1-2-3 Q1 (I'm not going to suggest an acronym :).) After level 14, I suppose we could actually go after the Elder Elemental God.
