D&D 5E (2014) Question about change shape and Paladin Divine Sense

Change Shape (I'm looking at the 5.0 Night Hag action) is ambiguous. On one hand, it says "The hag magically polymorphs into a Small or Medium female humanoid". On the other, it says "Her statistics are the same in each form." The stat block lists the hag as a Medium fiend, so the first sentence...

D&D 5E (2014) Question about change shape and Paladin Divine Sense

I get what you're saying. If Durin's Bane takes on the form of an elf maiden, he's still a balrog, a demon, and a fiend on the inside. But there are no characteristics associated with type. AFAICT, there isn't any single quality all fiends have in common, so none of a creature's particular...

D&D 5E (2014) Question about change shape and Paladin Divine Sense

Are we talking about the 9th level spell shapechange? If so, the only thing the 5.0/5.1 version of the spell says possibly touching on this is “Your game statistics are replaced by the statistics of the chosen creature,” so it depends on whether you classify creature type as a game statistic...

    D&D General 1s and 20s: D&D's Narrative Mechanics

Okay, well, as I said up-thread, I think that's a fine way to play. Nothing wrong with it. For me, though, it's enough to think up a "normal" consequence for failure, which I usually let the players know about before the die is rolled. Thinking up something particularly devious in the event of a...

    D&D General 1s and 20s: D&D's Narrative Mechanics

They can be. A failed ability checks in my games always comes with a consequence that follows from what's at stake in the situation, so if the PC(s) risk offending the baron to that extent, you betcha.

D&D General How do I build Crystar in D&D?

He chooses to ally with Order, so it seems like a natural fit to me. It's listed as having an "essentially earthlike" environment on marvunapp.com, so I would think of it as an alternative Earth in a parallel Prime. I like to put any world that's the focus of conflict for the PCs on the Prime...

D&D General How do I build Crystar in D&D?

He should be a human paladin. His crystal physiology is basically armor. He's the main character, so he should be a PC. On the planet world of Crystalium which I assume is a Material Plane world.

    D&D General Dwarven Vikings

Why, yes! In the current state of my evolving default setting for D&D, which is heavily influenced by JRR Tolkien's "matter of Middle-earth", there is a direct correspondence between Dwarves and the Neanderthals (Homo neanderthalensis) of the real world. Their story begins in the "time before...

D&D 5E (2024) Should a general Adventurer class be created to represent the Everyman?

Contrary to the impression my posts might have created, I'm not particularly concerned with the name. I'm just trying to understand the concept because I think it's important, when designing a class for 5E, to have a clear idea of its story. The central concept you describe here seems to be...

    D&D General 1s and 20s: D&D's Narrative Mechanics

I don't do critical success/failure on ability checks or saves. If the roll succeeds, the character achieves their intent. If it fails, they do not and suffer a consequence I probably stated before the roll was made. I don't know what you mean by narrative mechanic, but I assume it has...

D&D 5E (2024) Should a general Adventurer class be created to represent the Everyman?

Okay, but in the title you say outright and in the OP imply the "Adventurer" class is meant to represent "the Everyman" by which I assumed you meant the Everyman stock character archetype. Maybe you meant something else. I don't know. Of the concepts you've described here, only the first seems...

D&D 5E (2024) Should a general Adventurer class be created to represent the Everyman?

Okay, yeah, maybe in the Geek Talk forum, lol. This clarifies things somewhat, but I think calling it the "Everyman" is muddling the conversation. The everyman isn't the lucky guy or the guy protected by fate or the gods. If that's the concept, then I think a better name for the class would be...

D&D 5E (2024) Should a general Adventurer class be created to represent the Everyman?

That doesn't quite capture it, and I don't think being average really comes into it. Ordinary is closer to the mark, but not average because the everyman must also display benign conduct for easy audience identification: things like being kind, gentle, good-natured, and friendly. The average...

D&D 5E (2024) Should a general Adventurer class be created to represent the Everyman?

Sure, but what about the description? The examples are just there for illustrative purposes. I don't see a lot of agreement in the thread about what an everyman is, so I was hoping for some discussion along those lines. It's hard to design a class without a clear idea of its story. The article...
