D&D 5E (2014) Ben Riggs talks to Richard Baker. Phandelver in 2018 alone sold 300k copies.

the answer might be that at that point it is entirely / mostly recycled material that many have already, reducing the number of people interested in it.

Ben Riggs: 'The Golden Age of TTRPGs is Dead'

licensing was basically flat, so it did not drop a lot, not sure what % of overall D&D it is however

Ben Riggs: 'The Golden Age of TTRPGs is Dead'

yeah, SD was timed perfectly to benefit from it. Not sure anyone else managed to catch that window at all though, rather than just a generally slightly elevated level of resentment towards WotC

Ben Riggs: 'The Golden Age of TTRPGs is Dead'

keep in mind that the brand is not the same as actual D&D book sales…

Ben Riggs: 'The Golden Age of TTRPGs is Dead'

did he put a date on the prediction? The thing might still be ahead. The premise of ‘as D&D goes, so does the hobby’ is one I see in this forum repeatedly, so not sure he was wrong about that. What he probably is wrong about is how much harm the OGL debacle did to WotC / D&D, and as a...

Ben Riggs: 'The Golden Age of TTRPGs is Dead'

yeah, no surprise there. I don’t think anyone was expecting WotC to release a new edition and sales of the core books to drop as a result of that. The real question is how long they can sustain that, ie is D&D actually growing faster as a result or are the increased sales solely due to upgrades...

D&D General More Details Revealed for Forgotten Realms Digital Expansions

yes, and bundles generally should be cheaper than buying the individual items, so whether you call it overcharging or not, it disincentivizes going with the digital bundle, and I can see why that might get you to question the whole thing and how much you want / need it too

D&D General Fall of Netheril- The Return of the Arcane Age Subsetting

it will take more than 7 species to justify the $20 price tag… if it contains the MotM ones, would they not say that it includes more than 7?

Ben Riggs: 'The Golden Age of TTRPGs is Dead'

I don’t know, on the one hand 5e was an outlier, but at the same time you would not release a new edition that you expect to have worse sales than you would expect to get from simply staying with the current edition The verdict on this one will still be out for a while in either case

D&D 5E (2024) When are we getting announcements for 2026 books?

try Google, this was one of the top results but does not go into much detail about that movie https://thewertzone.blogspot.com/2018/02/dungeons-and-dragons-movie-switches.html?m=1 also https://www.enworld.org/threads/d-d-movie-takes-cues-from-guardians-of-the-galaxy.663630/

    Does Anyone Care? (Cosmere RPG)

sounds like you are giving Cosmere more of a chance than Daggerheart got. Where did DH go wrong?

    Does Anyone Care? (Cosmere RPG)

I agree with both, I kinda like the ToV changes over the 5.5 ones tho, but ultimately neither went far enough imo. The OGL accelerated at a minimum several of the games, including ToV, SD, and SotWW, probably also Draw Steel. They were all in the works before WotC decided to blow up their fanbase

    Does Anyone Care? (Cosmere RPG)

the categorizations sound accurate, you could add Shadow of the Weird Wizard as a more aggressive redesign of 5e as well (and one I prefer over 5.5) Tales of the Valiant as an alternative to 5e / 5.5 for those who like D&D but are fed up with WotC / Hasbro (I might start to fall into that...

    Does Anyone Care? (Cosmere RPG)

nothing wrong with that, just not like how that post read to me. It did not sound excited for anything in particular, just tired of stuff they have been doing for 30 years

sounds like a lot of words for 'I am bored with the stuff I have done for 30 years already'?

    Does Anyone Care? (Cosmere RPG)

they made $50k or less with 1000 or even only 400 backers, that hardly anyone plays them or has heard of them seems to be the logical conclusion

D&D 5E (2024) When are we getting announcements for 2026 books?

I don't know, I want more than 100 one shot ideas from WotC. The DMG approach is too bare bones for me, my own stuff can be at that level because I do know more anyway, but from a published adventure I expect more

What are your thoughts on TTRPGs with non-standard dice?

It discourages me from taking a closer look at the game and generally feels gimmicky more than like a genuine design need (funky dice). Regular dice with special icons on them I can take or leave, they are mapped to ordinary dice easily enough
