D&D 5E (2024) Command is the Perfect Encapsulation of Everything I Don't Like About 5.5e

« I claimed that Elric was a low-down dirty scoundrel who lies, cheats and steals, and would break into your home to take everything that wasn’t nailed down. That was incorrect and I recant. A self-respecting thief like Elric would definitely bring a crowbar (it’s in the burglar’s pack) and...

D&D 5E (2024) Command is the Perfect Encapsulation of Everything I Don't Like About 5.5e

DM4: I confess. (Useless, since he didn’t specify what he confessed to). DM5: Bless me, heavenly light of Lathander, for I have sinned. It has been 20 years since my last confession. In that time I have committed many sins. To begin with…(6 seconds are up and he stops confessing)

D&D 5E (2024) Command is the Perfect Encapsulation of Everything I Don't Like About 5.5e

There is an important difference. If you shove an NPC out of the window, you shove an NPC out of the window. If you Command an NPC to defenestrate, they will shove YOU out of the window.

    D&D 5E (2024) Rules that annoy you

“Swinginess” means that extreme events are more likely. The way you measure departure from the mean in probability is through the standard deviation. The standard deviation of 1d20 + 5 is larger than 1d20 + 1d10. Math doesn’t lie.

Fair enough. I didn’t see he had responded when I did.

The ‘90s was a different time. They believed that killing off a character and replacing him with an identical copy was “raising the stakes”.

No, your limit is simply different. You cannot assert that your level is higher without knowing what he will balk at that you wouldn’t.

    D&D 5E (2024) Rules that annoy you

It seems that you are arguing that because Healing Word restores consciousness to a PC that has been reduced to 0 hp, and Healing Word is healing magic, than the PC must have taken meat damage. However, by this same reasoning, if I cast Healing Word on a character that has taken 2 hp of damage...

    D&D 5E (2024) Rules that annoy you

No, it doesn’t. From a probability perspective, there are more options, but in the d20 + d10 version, the options will be more clustered around the average (16) than in d20 + 5 (where you have an equal chance of getting 6 or 25). In D&D, what matters is beating a target number, not the...

Didn’t that happen more than once over 7 seasons?

    D&D General Who shouldn't play D&D

Is that what you (general you) are doing, by saying the game should reflect what you like, not necessarily what the broader public likes?

Exactly this. I could not have formulated it better myself! You get knocked down to 0 and get a healing word next turn? You were just momentarily stunned. You get knocked down to zero, receive no healing and fail your death saves? The foe’s attack must have nicked an artery that the other...

Actually, since hp doesn’t represent meat points, you just splash some water on their face to wake them up.

I think this is more a perception problem than an actual problem. The actual mathematical effect of a proficiency die is to reduce the swinginess of the d20. And the larger the proficiency die (so the more proficient you are), the larger the reduction in swinginess. To me, this makes sense...

    D&D 5E (2024) Rules that annoy you

Interestingly, I use a proficiency die and it actually makes things LESS swingy, rather than more. Rolling two dice (even different dice) makes it more likely that the total is close to the average.

Also, Mindy is a hamster. Her lack of higher reasoning and opposable thumbs make it difficult for her to play D&D.

While I 100% agree with you and would probably select something similar as my pet peeve with the game, I can’t help but notice that a lot of others posters’ pet peeve can be described as “the game does not care about simulation in this one respect”.

    D&D General Player-generated fiction in D&D

Sure. If I I go to a restaurant, I have a pretty good idea what I’m getting. If the DM announces a pirate campaign, it could be “Pirates of Penzance”, “Pirates of the Caribbean”, “Vikings” or “Spelljammer”.
