    D&D General 1s and 20s: D&D's Narrative Mechanics

I do not know if this has been mentioned, but it would be an interesting learning exercise for the table and cool reward to have the players narrate their 1's and 20's. You can have the table overrule them (GM gets an equal vote too) if they prove to be too silly in their narration, it is a...

I'd like to second @robertsconley's appreciation of @pemerton's post upthread which beautifully illustrated the differences between the playstyles. I also appreciate @robertsconley's response with that example from his game. My take is that part of the attempt to create a Living World game is...

I was fortunate enough to reveal a 10+ year secret to our current table a few sessions ago through the fiction. It did not have any real ramifications on decision-making but it did surprise and excite some of the players who were there 10+ years ago. It is fun when that happens.

The price of streaming vs out right owning

That's a pretty smart way to manage streaming. Requires some dedication.

Nah I wasn't clear enough in my first post, completely understand. All good.

In our most recent game the PCs had to provide an argument to change the mind of individual NPCs out of a group (a Council) on any number of issues which the NPCs had an issue with. These issues were listed on a spreadsheet for ease and represented the intuitive knowledge the PCs had about the...

I wasn't saying anything about better or worse. I just find US amusing to defend against calls for kitchen-sink player choice but "scoff" at anything that seeks to diminish kitchen-sink GM authority and vice versa. We humans are funny. That is all. It's an appreciation of our silliness.

Just something I want to comment on trying to catchup on this thread... We have posters discussing how they do not like the restrictions placed on the GM particularly those found in Narrative games. In the same vein they argue that restrictions on players choices are important/necessary to...

Thanks for these examples! I take a certificate in your valiant games is a meta-resource for that system. The 5e DMG lists 2 approaches on page 106 for bringing wilderness to life. Travel-Montage approach - where the destination is more important than the journey and they provide techniques...

D&D 5E (2014) For those playing 2014 5e, how are you reacting to the 2024 update?

Our table has ignored it in its entirety. We have home-brewed enough of 2014 to not have to concern ourselves about 2024 and any adjustments WotC have made. One player at our table runs a Pathfinder game with some of his colleagues while the other runs a modified low-magic 5e.

Geez, are you seriously taking all that on yourself, they do not manage their own character sheets?

I'd say out of the two, your monthly campaign comes closer to how I run things for my bi-weekly game, with differences of course. I agree with your this far. Although it is true I have not read enough of the exchanges (likely less than what I should have), but I think highlighting internal...

Summaries would be good, but I do not do them. I used to provide details on pertinent information religiously on our Obsidian Portal page, but it soon became work for little to no benefit, I felt. And the need for perfection crept in and I found myself always adjusting and fixing. Also, not...

Of course. I didn't mean you do not but I wanted to reflect a similarity between the two games as opposed to always stressing on the differences, which DO exist. I did read, I DID note that first. But I have to be honest, I would be very surprised if players of the other RPGs did not ensure...

Aligns with group's goals can easily be replaced with aligns with character's goals. Have you found any examples in this thread where the other side is not concerned with plausibility in their games? Clocks are used in indie games, typically our games (yours and mine and others with similar...

This is how I view it. Like I have said before in this thread, I see the setting as the GMPC and I have injected quite a bit of player-facing mechanisms in our game and yet I recognise the setting as a dominant driving force. At our table the party has willingly split to pursue different...

I guess one may view the removal of the below as a downside. It appears to establish a stronger connection between you and the favoured enemy. I'm completely neutral on this issue.

Oh I wasn't aware. Seems like they made it a generic ability which perhaps gets more use than having it tied to a character's past. I suppose there are pro's and con's with these changes - comes down to what your table prefers.

Out of interest did the player have a particular backstory for his selection of orcs as his ranger's favoured enemy or was it just I'm picking orcs?
