4e got a lot of criticism from the sim crowd about how the opening of doors supposedly had shifting DCs depending on one's level on this very forum. I cannot remember the outcome of those debates but if the opening of a door DCs shifts because of the ever-changing math as your character...

Last week, the Level 14-16 party beat Graz'zt, 2 Marilith and a Storm Giant...easily

Yes, the designers did a poor job. I use a combination of tools to assist against such sad outcomes, some of which are Hit Points I have a table for how hit points are calculated and they are dependent on if the creature is a standard, elite, named etc Touch Attacks for ethereal creatures...

Bold emphasis mine. Just keep in mind about the game you're referring to...and why and how the math changed.

No I do not see the difference. See below. I imagine I'm not alone when I was playing 1e-3e where there were good and bad NPCs and they were fighting I would use DM decides as to what happens, thereby degrading the NPCs as I see fit. And then when the PCs intervened I would not make those...

Who is in charge of designing monsters and challenges for the encounter? And how is that different from ANY D&D game where the GM changes up the monsters and challenges? When a GM changes up a 5e monster per WotC published material do you call that a serious house ruling? Do you ever have good...

I think it is because it is easier to just create a minion monster for an encounter than deal with the game repercussions of walking deities.

I do not think the disparity of hit points between minions and others was an issue for 4e. I'm not sure sim was a concern given math of the game. What do you mean by groups?

Particularly hard is subjective. Skill Challenges were formalised in DMG2. Half the usual playable races and classes were in PHB2. The issue of how things were released in 4e is not new, but I do not think you can draw the conclusion you have drawn. Let's move past the goblins shall we? The...

Ok, I replied to Lanefan who was making the case that the lich's stats did not change from level to level when you encountered it. It was not a comment about appropriate creatures based on level. That is great lore for a weaker form of lich. I'm sure you agree in that that the vestige is very...

I do not have an issue imagining a high-level warrior using mortal strikes against 3-4 ogres

My point exactly. If your argument against the minion concept is using a Lich as an example, then you do not understand the purpose of the minion.

I can see a high-level warrior wading through ogres with clean efficient kills, it is a less likely occurrence happening with a cluster of liches I feel.

Using that technique what would make them a minion? The idea behind my changes is that the fighter would still wade through if they did enough damage, but that smaller amounts of damage would not suddenly drop the creature.

D&D 3.x Mike Selinker about the release of 3.0 D&D

2e until till 3.5e Man that was so fortunate...I'd have been highly annoyed if I had picked up 3.0

I'd say we are spoilt for choice right now (regarding tools we can use), fortunately.

This is true. During the early days of 5e / the D&D "Next" phase I had the table experiment with capped HD based on size (Medium = 6, Large = 10....etc). Resistance and Damage Threshold could also be implemented. I mean that if i wanted to pick a part the fiction of D&D I have an issue with...

The math of 4e is not my preferred method of reflecting the world. However if I use the minion concept in 5e I would be using things like damage threshold, resistance and # of attacks etc to reflect a minion. I would not be changing the creature's AC, with regards to damage I'd likely use the...

Well I attempted to provide a non-gamist representation which is what you had asked for. I feel the use of the minion concept is to emulate the cinematic experience of the character being so experienced/awesome that they are able to wade through previously considered dangerous monsters with...

Apologies only getting to this now. I get that, but also in a game which starts using minion ogres they become common place as opposed to ogres you encounter when you're 5th level. i.e. the board states changes as your character progresses in levels and you adapt to the new difficulty. Anyways...
