Daggerheart Review: The Duality of Robust Combat Mechanics and Freeform Narrative

Explicit grid movement in squares is an option. Sidebar on the combat movement. the P&P are 9 to a letter sheet, so looks to be 10.5/3 by 7.5/3, for 3.5"×2.5", which is MTG card size, but some printers require margins larger than 0.25". Note: art-less versions are on the download resources...

Daggerheart Review: The Duality of Robust Combat Mechanics and Freeform Narrative

5e: A 6th level (of 20) primary caster has 3-4 levels of spells, with different numbers of spells per each spell level, a pool of available spells to cast with those pools, a wider pool of known but unready (needing a rest to access), and 7-8 class special abilities. 0-3 race or 1-2 Ancestry...

I am surprised I am still excited for Daggerheart

They have... reprints. With the Edge imprint in place of FFG. Pray they DON'T do any homegrown - they're likely to screw it up badly.

Daggerheart Review: The Duality of Robust Combat Mechanics and Freeform Narrative

D&D 5 has Fatigue to track; less used but still present as a core rule. Plus most D&D casters have to keep track of 1 to 9 (varies by level) separate pools of spell points (Except Warlock)

I am surprised I am still excited for Daggerheart

The thing is, there are fanbases, and note that Modiphius is still treating it as their flagship RPG (pun intended). Current licensed Trek RPGS, Commercial: STA and Captain's Log (both 2d20 from Modiphius), GPD, PD20, PD1e Current Fan-License RPGs: Alpha Quadrant, Where No Man Has Gone Before...

Daggerheart Review: The Duality of Robust Combat Mechanics and Freeform Narrative

I'm reading it now, but it looks like less mechanical stuff. Half as many levels, advancement is on the "character guide" (which is essentially page 2 of the sheet), not a new power every level, most things are fueled by either hope or stress. Given that the once per type powers are on cards...

I am surprised I am still excited for Daggerheart

Star Trek Star Wars Alien All three of which are on their 2nd or later license, all three have significant player bases. Trek's player base is strongly divided... but it's divided by system used. FASA, LUG, Decipher, Prime Direcitive 1e... all having player bases unhappy with STA (Star Trek...

Daggerheart Review: The Duality of Robust Combat Mechanics and Freeform Narrative

Designers' goals with the design are the goals I was referring to. In the case of DH, those are pretty well laid out.

Daggerheart Review: The Duality of Robust Combat Mechanics and Freeform Narrative

Many GMs use the roll not to determine if information is given, but how much information.

Daggerheart Review: The Duality of Robust Combat Mechanics and Freeform Narrative

If the goals are laid out, the assessment of whether the mechanics can achieve them isn't all that subjective. Whether the will is less objective than if they can. Whether or not it's enjoyable or desirable is the subjective part.

Daggerheart Review: The Duality of Robust Combat Mechanics and Freeform Narrative

Better is a highly personal &/or situational assessment. The only universal is that good editing and layout improve any ruleset's usability.

Palladium was a constant target of the Anchorage ultra-right for the burnpiles.

Daggerheart Review: The Duality of Robust Combat Mechanics and Freeform Narrative

One of the problems with traditional structures is that the needed structure in an RPG is always more amorphous than the traditional 1 Act Model, 3 Act Model, 5 Act Model, or other "classical" dramatic structures; they often feel stilted in RPG play. A few games have more useful structures...

How Long Do You Wait Before You Houserule a New TTRPG?

There are several "Hmm, that's odd" choices in D&D 5e... That's one. That some classes don't is yet another... one way or the other, dudes. I've lost my nostalgia for older D&D, too... too many things to houserule to make it viable for me as a GM. I'll note that I don't mind the Pugmire &...

Daggerheart Review: The Duality of Robust Combat Mechanics and Freeform Narrative

Personally, I've no use for OSRIC... I love to read OSR games, but not to run most of them. Daggerheart is hitting that right blend of narrativism and sim that I like.

Describe your last RPG session in more than 5 words.

Fallout: Steetch and Xavi... Steetch is a big burly (S=10 E=8) Nightkin Supermutant... Xavi is a vault dweller who's used to sleeping in the active barns of a vault with no normal human spaces. They're going out to find new breeding stock for a vault just an hour's hike from Everett...

Daggerheart Review: The Duality of Robust Combat Mechanics and Freeform Narrative

The Combat Wheelchair rules are interesting, too... and they give weapon stats for slamming with your chair... I knew the art had showed a character in a chair, but this is a first class treatment. Damnit, there goes my budget.

RPG CROWDFUNDING NEWS – OSRIC 3, Cloud Empress, ShadowWest, and more

I've run a few sessions of TMNT... It was fun, at the time, but char gen took too long... mostly due to copying skills down. Palladium's combat mechanics can be quite fun, but also wind up being highly cinematic. I've not heard much about the mechanics of the Mutants in the ___ series. SOmeone...

How Long Do You Wait Before You Houserule a New TTRPG?

While I listed "after a few adventures" - I will often take ambiguities and note my decisions in my notes-file during the reading process. And check them against errata if I can. I try to avoid houseruling when I can.
