What do you do when a Player dies?

While he wasn't a current player, a friend who had been a gamer died a rapid death from cancer - from diagnosis to morgue about 4 months. At his widow's request, I MC'd his non-religious memorial, and read materials on behalf of family members of his who were absent. I also eulogized him...

Looking for dice-based TTRPG players, who have a few minutes free time for a quick survey.

Importance of balance was a question on it. But the amount of imbalance tolerable is a significant question, too — but intelligible answers on it require a maths background many gamers lack. Such as χ² values.

    Realistic Combat that's Simple(ish)

Learn some quantum physics, TOG. EVERYTHING is random probabilities at the quantum level. For that, matter, take a collegiate statistics class, because it's clear you have a major gap in your skillset. AS far as gaming sim, there was a 3rd party add-on for RTG's Cyberpunk... it got the numbers...

Which RPGs best model real-world skill development?

CT is the only one without experience rules. MT and T4 are learn by doing & learn by training. TNE is spend experience. T20 is, of course, d20 skills and feats.

Which RPGs best model real-world skill development?

No edition has no advancement... CT's is just insanely slow - 8 years to perma-lock a skill in play, vs 4 or fewer in CGen (it's 1 year if using Bks 4,5,6,7, or 9 Character Gen. Man, 40 years of CT only running "Books" to Book 8, it feels so odd to include the new Book 9: Pirates) To be more...

Which RPGs best model real-world skill development?

Since so much of experience and development is subjective, I consider them only in relation between in Char Gen and In Play. GURPS 1e⋯3e do so only in Character Gen, and only when the skill limit option is used... then, in play XP is MUCH faster than CGen. I find that Burning Wheel feels more...

    Realistic Combat that's Simple(ish)

Yes, there are. There are systems where the probabilities are close replicas of the observed odds of outcomes from real life. They tend not to be overly detailed, tho'. Some of the computer ones are so good that they are used in forensic investigations. And in training. Microsoft Flight...

    Realistic Combat that's Simple(ish)

One roll resolution? that's a hard barrier. more than 95% of the games I've read use damage rolls. Two come immediately to mind: Rolemaster, but it really isn't. MegaTraveller. After a bit of mental juggling... Year Zero comes to mind MegaTraveller, see below. Why Rolemaster isn't a 1-roll...

RPG Archive: Boot Hill Wild West RPG

It's worth saying: Westerns as a genre almost always have an audience; it's seldom a big one. Also worth noting: a lot of classroom games about the Oregon Trail are written (teacherspayteachers.com has over 40), targeting various ages and educational standards. I suspect that they provide a...

    Advancement, A Weird Idea?

I found that tracking success/fail for advancement in Mouse Guard often was a mild interruption for new-to-it players, but became quickly backgrounded by players to an almost imperceptable habit. Burning wheel, with its more complex tracking, never did for me nor my players.

How many "steps" is too many?

in my two sessions, the most common was actually 2 hp... between the two thresholds. Armor reduced that to one frequently enough, but at tier 2 (second session) damage outpaced armor.

    What RPGs genres are lacking?

Axiomatically, that takes them out of actual western and into weird west.

How many "steps" is too many?

Thresholds set by armor and level. Some special abilities also adjust it. If unarmored, it's (level)/(2×Level), no reduction uses. It's 0—3, actually. if damage roll ≤ 0, 0 HP if 1—(low threshold-1): 1 HP if (low threshold) — (high threshold - 1): 2 HP if (high threshold) to infinity: 3 HP...

What do YOU plan on doing with Daggerheart?

The rules are pretty clear, at least to me: only a roll with fear gives the GM a free spotlight for the roll. A golden opportunity can also go straight to a spotlight, but that's not for the roll. Other spotlights take a fear, or masive player inaction. So NPCs are tied to either players...

    What RPGs genres are lacking?

The majority of western setting adventures are for Deadlands... and that's a weird west. There's a few seeds in the Challenge article for Space 1889 in the US, there are some adventure ideas in Western Hero... Most games that don't have compatibility with D&D lack adventures... at least ones...

    Mini-games in an RPG

I've often used a minigame affected by character skills for resolving gambling. It's really quite simple... Mind you, this was for CT, but works in MT and MgT 1 as well. each gambler antes. each rolls d66. if not cheating: → add 1/2 skill level, round up, to the 1's place → add 1/2 skill...

    What RPGs genres are lacking?

1883 and Lawman: Bass Reaves argue otherwise. There were a few black Lawmen, so L:BR is merely Historical Fictiion in the Western tradition. Moribund? Maybe, but every time it's been declared, some new variation of Westerns arises like a zombie. Note: I don't consider myself a fan of westerns...
