When role play game become a story telling

Do you let your players know the kind of game you are planning? I used to hang out on the Pyramid newsgroup and one thing that always impressed me was treating starting your game as if both the GM and the players were auditioning for each other. The GM gives a synopsis of the goals of the...

    D&D 5E (2014) Homebrew Giant Elites

I've used the Stone Giants elites and the Cloud Giant elites and they both gave the party a new fear of giants. The party loved the description of the Stone Giant Runecarver with his spells written into his body.

Find An Adventure Wth Adventure Lookup

Does anyone know what issue of Dungeon the AL site goes up to? It looks like I have to select TSR or Paizo to get the different publishers of the magazine. It would be nice if I could pick Dungeon and then set the issues I have available.

    D&D 5E (2014) Spiritual Guardians question

As per spell description you have to be able to see your allies at the start of the spell casting to exclude them from the effects. Too bad people coming around the corner later and invisible or hidden party members.

#RPGaDAY Day 02: What is an RPG you would like to see published?

I thought The Expanse was originally a modified GURPS Transhuman Space game TL8-9 with a reactionless drive available. I would love to see the campaign notes for the game though. EDIT: I was wrong, apparently it was a D20 Modern game. One of the players just prefers GURPS.

group age range (how low can you go)??

I run a game at the Long Beach (CA) Unitarian Universalist Church. I won't turn down any players and we range from 10 to 50 at different times. The 10 year old and her brothers moved away so the youngest now is 12 and her father plays too. I've had to limit teenagers from playing evil...

D&D 5E (2014) Why does WotC put obviously bad or illogical elements in their adventures?

For me the problem with Maelstrom is there isn't any clear way to exit. Sure the conch gets you there but nothing takes you back. Fine if the players wait until teleport is available but doesn't make sense for the giants without access to magic/teleport. SKT definitely requires some playing...

Where are all the great spy RPGs?

I always enjoyed the James Bond RPG over Top Secret. If I wasn't using GURPS or HERO system.

How should a GM handle refused plots

As a DM, I work to present multiple plot lines and let the players pursue those they are interested in. Often they will follow multiple plots at a time a main villain plot and a few secondary plots. Plots players don't follow up either get resolved off screen by other heroes but not as well as...

It would seem that you'd want proficiency in grapple or at least to be able to hit (on) your spouse better on your wedding night.

    D&D 5E (2014) DM's, what's your experience with suggested Challenge Ratings?

I find myself paying attention to CR for the most powerful opponent and then add minions as necessary to complicate the situation. The only kinds of solo's I use are ones with legendary actions or ability to hit and run. I have a large party most of the time so what I try to pay attention to...

A Few More Tidbits About D&D Beyond From The Developer

I've been using the Game Master tool from Lion's Den and with the ability to import my own XML data, I'm not sure that this has much added value to me. This is late to the game and I already have a tool that does what they say they will do by phase 3.

D&D 5E (2014) If you've ever left D&D, what made you come back?

I played 1st edition and then played other RPGs (GURPS, Champions, CoC, other) and then after college I didn't have a regular group to play in and I don't usually care for online groups. I found a 3rd ed group but they were mostly combat optimizers and I didn't fit in with them. When my kids...

I'm using the witch class that one of my players was interested in. I also would use the 4 elements monk changes I've seen.

D&D 5E (2014) Holiday Challenge: Vow of the Silent Knight

I ran this with my group at work on Monday night. It was a blast. They figured out the charades pretty well and because there were more players and they were higher level I added some red-eyed, red-nosed, fire breathing reindeer (giant elk base) as well as buffing the dryads and letting the...

    D&D 5E (2014) A Victorian-Era, Minimal-Steampunk, Dead Magic, Mainly Roleplaying, Tabletop Game for a friend's girlfriend.

It sounds like you all should try Space:1889. Victorian steampunk in spades. I am more familiar with the original hardcover, but I see there is a pdf of more recent rules. I enjoyed playing it but I have no opinions on any of the adventures.
