I thought the covers looked gorgeous, but I already have the original alt cover of Tasha's and Xanathar's both. I can't justify over $100 for 3 new alt covers. I'll just wait for the single new book to be released stand alone. Then I can look at it in a store and see if it's something I want...
My guess was like those old 1980's cards from cracker jacks or something where the image changes based on the angle you view it from. So to see the animation, you'd kind of tilt the card side to side.
I suppose most reading this already know, but just in case- the author of the Fiend Factory article mention above, Don Turnbull, wrote the Sinister Secret of Saltmarsh and edited Fiend Folio. Definitely an accomplished fellow :)
