Love and Sex in the Ninth World: A Review

I get enough sex and romance in my real life (true statement: my wife was actually prom queen). What I want from my games is the stuff I don't get: limitless violence and destruction; court intrigue; monsters. And heaps of gold. Spaceships. Magic. Stuff like that. :)

90% of D&D Games Stop By Level 10; Wizards More Popular At Higher Levels

Well said. I wonder if part of it is time, as well - that is, the time spent playing in and running a campaign that starts at 1st level, and how a typical campaign only lasts a few months, at most, before it gasses out for some reason or another. I've started a few campaigns at Tier 2, and even...

The Battle Continues Over "Childish Things"

I think I fit into the 'elder statesman' category of gamer, having starting playing DnD probably around 1980, and so I remember - and probably still have social reflexes related to - the stigmatization of gaming in general, and RPGs in particular. It's equal parts refreshing, validating, and...

The Mountain Goats Announces Dungeons & Dragons-Inspired Album

Eberron? I believe that the theme song to the Mourning is Gojira's "From the Sky." Listen to that and imagine a wavefront of magic fire and fury blasting across the landscape, engulfing and blowing over things.

The Mountain Goats Announces Dungeons & Dragons-Inspired Album

Spot-on, MB. A collection of Yes and Kansas album covers alone are enough to inspire some adventures.

The Mountain Goats Announces Dungeons & Dragons-Inspired Album

All true! And did you know that Lemmy, late of Motorhead, was a roadie for Hawkwind? You created a transition back to Metal, and maybe didn't know it. :)

The Mountain Goats Announces Dungeons & Dragons-Inspired Album

To add to my case that Metal is for RPGs, please see below the lyrics to Judas Priest's "The Sentinel," from their "Defenders of the Faith" album. Along deserted avenues Steam begins to rise The figures primed and ready Prepared for quick surprise He's watchin' for a sign His life is on the...

The Mountain Goats Announces Dungeons & Dragons-Inspired Album

I had never heard of them before reading this, and so I listened to a snippet of their stuff on Amazon. If you're not familiar with them, they are a folksy mostly unplugged acoustic guitar-driven outfit with mostly slow songs. To me, RPGs, especially of the fantasy genre, will always be best...

Training for the End Times: An Outbreak Undead 2nd Edition Review

Good review. I've looked at this a few times at my FLGS and had a similar reaction to the layout, color, and typesetting: it presents a neat visual, but in some places it's overwhelms functionality as a book. I like the simulationist take on survival horror, too, in theory - if you've got a...

RPG 2019 Resolutions: New Year, New Game, New You?

Those are all excellent goals. The DMG is a goldmine, and I think it's easy to gloss over the story and game management advice in it and the PHB.

Worlds of Design: When There's Too Many Magic Items

Good points, both. Anyway, "too many" is subjective in this case, and so it's entirely based on what sort of story the group is trying to tell, and what sort of world they're trying to model.

Worlds of Design: When There's Too Many Magic Items

I must say this: the title should read "Worlds of Design: When There Are Too Many Magic Items." Call me a grammar nazi, but "items" is plural, and thus requires "are" and not "is." This a common error in spoken English, but a grammar-checker ought to pick this up when writing.

Dragon Reflections #18 – Gamers Behaving Badly

Sad and true. This is why, when on business travel, I either check out a local attraction of some note, or indulge in NFL channel shows on hotel cable (we don't have cable or satellite at home). Or I work on session prep for my games.

Dragon Reflections #18 – Gamers Behaving Badly

I travel regularly for work, and attend a few industry-specific conventions each year and it's the same thing: people tend to behave badly when away from home and outside their regular context and groups. Years ago, while at a professional conference in a large convention center, I witnessed...

John Wick Presents Lays Off 7th Sea Staff

Perhaps it was about politics - he wasn't clear. I, too, backed 7S and have been pleased with the book I got and the many add'l PDFs I've received. I got to play with one of the designers a few years ago; he was really intense, too, but ran a good game,
