#RPGaDAY Day 16: What RPG do you enjoy using as is?

I'll second the mentions of CP2020 and FFG's Star Wars gams as ones I'd run rules-as-written, were I to run either. I'll add to that Modiphius' new Star Trek Adventures, for the two reasons that I really like the system, which balances between detailed rules and cinematic action; and that I am...

Find An Adventure Wth Adventure Lookup

A buddy tipped me off to AL a few days ago and it's really easy to use, and seems correct and comprehensive. It's neat.

Star Trek Adventures: Now that the full rules are out, what do you think?

Well, and surprisingly so after my initial sense that the rules are too fiddly and crunchy. Yes, there are a number of sub-systems and there are great many things you can do with Momentum, and so more experienced players (with the system, that is) will be able to evoke more of Star Trek from the...

#RPGaDAY Day 11: Which ‘dead game’ would you like to see reborn?

I'd be up for a reboot of Gamma World 2nd or 3rd edition. I have 1st and 3rd, and while the first box has nostalgia value, the 3rd ed is a lot better as game and with world information. The neon green 4e era version is not to my liking. Bring back some fusion rifles and wrecked cities!

#RPGaDAY Day 11: Which ‘dead game’ would you like to see reborn?

This is a good question, and I really like the responses above. In a way we all get to cheat on this one, since we really are in a renaissance of old games through POD, fan-supported work, and in some cases reboots. I'm excited for the new Top Secret, which I backed, and also very much looking...

Three Acts And The Hero's Journey

Funny! No, they were enriched with some of the stuff and a lot of the wealth. Rather than playing the adventure as their characters, we jointly narrated through it and added some elements, like more barbarian tribes from the east and a small brush war with them. The players, by the end of the...

Thanks for the nod. I like STA a great deal - FFG's SW, too.

Three Acts And The Hero's Journey

We ended up dumping the last book in that AP, too, as it took the story in a bizarre direction that was supposedly (according to the authors) foreshadowed throughout the whole AP, but hadn't been. I loved Kingmaker books 1, 2, 4, and 5, but 3 and 6 were odd departures from the story. I played...

Three Acts And The Hero's Journey

Years ago, when running the Kingmaker AP, my group decided to hand-wave almost one whole book - the Varnhold Vanishing - because it added nothing to the story and really served more as a way to build levels and enrich the party with magical items. Its connection to the metastory was almost...

#RPGaDAY Day 09: What is a good RPG to play for about 10 sessions?

Good point. Horror is hard to maintain over time, I've found. Intrigue tends to have a longer lifespan, but actual fear and dread-causing horror is hard to keep up over a long campaign. WOD can be pretty heavy, if done well, and that works best in short story arcs.

Unearthed Arcana WotC's Mearls Presents A New XP System For 5E In August's Unearthed Arcana

Me, too. I don't know why folks get wrapped around the axle about this system or that - just go with what you and your group like best. As for encounter building, I think I'm going to dump accounting for CR and just eyeball it from here forward, providing the party with a sense of "this looks...

Three Acts And The Hero's Journey

Agreed completely. Pathfinder's Adventure Paths are full of these, as the story is enslaved to the system. I think a lot of people - that is, people I know and with whom I game - have moved away from hard XP and are instead providing for character advancement. I think this works well in a...

When the Sharks Finally Catch You: The Death of Geek Chic

Crazy high prices meant it would only be possible for a very small portion of the gamer market, at best. Stupid business model.

I'd happily buy, read, and maybe even play Dune.

Star Trek Adventures: Now that the full rules are out, what do you think?

@Morrus is an Organian, for sure. As for virtual gunpowder, you might want to try remodulating the transmogrifiers that govern the recplicator database. Or remove the field dampers on an EMH emitter and beam the stuff out of the holodeck. Both of those have worked for me in the past.

Star Trek Adventures: Now that the full rules are out, what do you think?

Okay, everyone - here's what to do. Make sure your speakers are on and open this link in another tab. Go ahead. It's nothing creepy and it's safe for work. Once you've got that going - do it! - come back here. Cool. You're back. Now imagine the scene, folks: oneshot and aramis erak on Cestus...

Star Trek Adventures: Now that the full rules are out, what do you think?

Wow. I think you folks take this stuff way too seriously. It's all a game....right? No system is perfect, and all this stuff is made up, anyway, so why worry about it so much? I don't mind 2d20. It's different than d20, or FFG or other systems I've played lately, and it offers the possibility...

Star Trek Adventures Pre-Order is live

If you're interested in cutting to the chase and reading about the system, start on page 72 (paginated on the PDF pages, not the actual number including the cover and whatnot). If you want a view on how they see the universe and ST as a genre, read up to pg72.
