    Monte Cook On Fumble Mechanics

In d20 games our house rule is if you roll a 1, you re-roll the die and something interesting happens if you roll a 1-5 on that second roll. I think this is where it's obvious that a good GM will seek to make things interesting and challenging for player through this, rather than just creating...

Exploring Original D&D Boxed Sets With Jon Peterson

Interesting. And I now know, because of it, that I have either the 5th, 6th, or 7th editions, because of the different Men & Magic cover, and the fact that my books have halflings, not Hobbits. I do, however have four add'l softcover books, always kept in the same box, which are each thicker...

    Why OD&D Is Still Relevant

However, in the case of a Model T, if you wear a Steampunk costume and introduce yourself as "Professor Mortimer Smythe III, esq." while driving it, you'd look pretty cool. In some crowds. OD&D does not afford that utility.

    Why OD&D Is Still Relevant

Newer is not necessarily better, as a great many of us decided after experiencing 4e. New Coke sucked, too. That said, I have the venerable White Box and all those little tan books - the original 1970-something copies - sitting on a shelf in my bedroom. A few years ago I read those rules, with...

CURSE OF STRAHD: Here's The Official Announcement & Cover Image!

Thank you, sir. If it's 10 levels of story plus setting fluff, that'd make for a hefty amount of extra information. I have to admit that, despite having played DnD since the 1978 Blue Box, which I proudly still own, I have never played nor do I own the original Ravenloft modules. I'm looking...

CURSE OF STRAHD: Here's The Official Announcement & Cover Image!

Found an answer: according to the Polygon article it'll be 250+ pages.

CURSE OF STRAHD: Here's The Official Announcement & Cover Image!

That's my thought, as well. The two Dragons books were only 8 levels each, and a little under 100 pages, and they're $30. Perhaps this will include more fluff and world-related material so flesh out things? And the cover does look nice.

Anyone see a page count in any of that?

Your most anticipated games of 2016?

I have to admit that I feel slightly fanboy-ish over this, but I'm really interested in whatever comes next from WOTC for 5e. I've picked up almost all the hardbacks for the system, from rules to adventures, and I'm really happy with all of it. As an old grognard of sorts I'd really like to see...

Your most anticipated games of 2016?

Me, too - however, I am not holding my breath given how poorly that project has been managed. Bummer, too, because it should be a good game.

    Star Wars Spoilers Thread [Spoilers]

That makes a lot of sense - thanks! I'm going to use that. Q: what/who was Max Von Sydow supposed to be?

    Star Wars Spoilers Thread [Spoilers]

I was thinking about my dear Y-Wings when the squadron took off for the attack...looked for them, and knew they'd likely not be there. They were current during the Clone Wars, and old by the time the Rebellion starting blowing things up. I remember reading somewhere they they had no body panels...

Would You Back The Mystery $1 RPG Kickstarter?

Intriguing, and no, I will not join the 3000+ people who wagered little to get a complete unknown. I can use that to buy a soda, or gum, or maybe a cheap beer at happy hour - maybe - and those demonstrate that even a dollar is not to be wasted.

Why Aren't Designers Using The GUMSHOE System?

Some people can pull those off and they work; most can't. I avoid them, too.

Why Aren't Designers Using The GUMSHOE System?

It's always interesting to hear how other folks run their games. We try to do a lot of in-character dialog, even though it can be difficult. We use gamespeak a good amount at the table in the 5e game I'm running, and we use it a lot when we interact via our Obsidian Portal site between live...

Why Aren't Designers Using The GUMSHOE System?

Combat's the weakness, and one other thing I agree completely. I'm running NBA/Dracula Dossier right now and I think combat, even the special NBA adaptations, is weak. One of the problems evident in combat, and mirrored across the system, is the high level of player understanding of the many...

    Chill 3rd Edition

5 out of 5 rating for Chill 3rd Edition I played the original Chill from Pacesetter 30+ years ago and liked the world it built and vibe it sought to evoke at the table. Upon revisiting it in the last few years, however, I found the system to be clunky and not fitting for the type of game I want...
