News Digest for the Week of March 5

Achtung! Cthulhu 2d20 is really good. I was part of the closed playtest for the Quickstart and both the Player's Guide and GM's Guide, and the system ran smoothly and helped promote what felt like the spot-on right two-fisted pulp take on both WW2 and Lovecraftian horror. I know there are a few...

RPG Evolution: Gaming for Good with Jasper’s Game Day

Thanks for sharing this. I'd not heard of them before and it's nice to know of the good that's being done through the hobby, and to have an actionable contact if an opportunity comes up to take part in something like that.

WotC WotC Gets A New Logo?

I just thought it was funny. I like the new logo, and I dig that it reminds me of that movie "The Keep," although I can't take credit for recognizing that. That said....Modiphius is still my game company of choice these days...the logo won't get me to buy their stuff (or not, for that matter).

WotC WotC Gets A New Logo?

Funny. When I saw this article my first thought, after looking at it and thinking "huh, looks neat" was "how many comments until someone gripes about it?" Answer: one positive; the 2nd went negative. Social Media + Niche Fans are so predictable. :)

    It's Your Turn to GM

You need to chill out and have an ice cream cone or something. There was no reason at all to attack the author of the article at all...you could have just scrolled on.

Is The One Ring 2E Kickstarter going to break the records?

I am balanced on the edge here...it looks great, but they there's that issue of "could I build a group to play this, and if so, would it last beyond a few sessions?" I tried AiME for 5e and while I liked the books a lot and the rules mods, it never felt like Middle Earth - just dreary, low magic...

Check Out The One Ring 2E's Pre-Kickstarter Video!

We can hope that Tolkien's world will be left as it is.

Official RPG for Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra announced

I have wondered about that, too: how to handle those powers, and how flexible they are, within the typical rules sets out there.

Official RPG for Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra announced

I think that's a solid conclusion. And for me, an unfortunate one - I am no fan of PbtA. The original Avatar series? Absolutely, but not that game system.

RPG Print News – Troll Lord Games, Frog God Games, and More

I made the Tavern Burgers, Drow Mushrooms, and the apple/berry pie (name escapes me right now) - the two sauces that accompanied the burgers were excellent, as was the pie...and I am a big pie fan...much better than cake. I liked the addition of the blackberries, which gave what would have been...

RPG Print News – Troll Lord Games, Frog God Games, and More

A plug for the DnD Cookbook: I picked it up a week ago and made three things from it last weekend and they were excellent and very well-received by my family. It's well-written; the pictures are beautiful; and there's just enough fantasy fluff added to each recipe, as an introduction, to make it...

Making a Heroes' Feast: Traveler's Stew

Years ago, to kick off a 5e campaign, I made a hearty beef stew that I served in sourdough bread bowls. That seemed about as close to adventurers' tavern food as I could get. I also found a vintage recipe for apple and cheese pie (a late Middle Ages English recipe). The pie was good, although it...

Take A Look At The DUNE Character Sheet!

...but does Andy like Maiden? That's a good litmus test for a good game designer.

Take A Look At The DUNE Character Sheet!

I took part in the closed playtest and I am okay with saying that it's definitely on the narrative end of 2d20. Conan is crunchy; Star Trek Adventures less-so; Dune is farther along that continuum away from detailed crunch and toward descriptive narrative play. Whether you dig that or not is...

RPG Evolution: Take Care of Your Players

I've been GM'ing for over 35 years and have not yet lost a player to death. I've lost plenty to life events and such, and even some personal differences. But as this hobby binds people together over for many years - or can - this is part of the deal. Remember that they're people first, and...

Dragonlance Dragonlance's Margaret Weis & Tracy Hickman Are Suing WotC for Breach of Contract

Thanks - I can file that under "stuff I did not know before." BTW: Australia is a beautiful country - I visited Sydney, Brisbane, and Cairns years ago. Nice place; wonderful people.

Dragonlance Dragonlance's Margaret Weis & Tracy Hickman Are Suing WotC for Breach of Contract

Yeah good point - but if they're filing in federal court, that's where they hope to have it decided. Either way, it's a bummer that DL fans will likely not get to read those stories.

Dragonlance Dragonlance's Margaret Weis & Tracy Hickman Are Suing WotC for Breach of Contract

I don't need to pick a side....I have never liked DL myself, and WOTC lost me a few years ago. Aside from the Eberron book, their stuff all reads like warmed-over oatmeal: bland and boring.
