Don't let small sample size make you pivot too quickly either. I just played in a live play where a party of four very good 1st level characters got taken to school by 6 Stingbats. I design encounters to give monsters some synergy and as the GM I play them like they know what they are doing...
I think the domain rules from REIGN are worth a look. Obviously noone will use the ORE mechanics for their OSR game but the system is awesome. That's where I'd start for OSR domain play anyway.
Here's a village map I did today for my current Shadowdark adventure project. It's a screen grab because the PNG is too big, so some of the detail is a little fuzzy.
It helps to shift the focus of the game away somewhat from hitting things with pointy metal sticks. You need some of that, but it's a tiresome way to run high level play generally.
I think the right approach to faction play can make warfare and politics great options for high level play in SD. I actaully starting working on just such a sytem the other day, probably to include in my first city supplement for SoE.
I'm almost finished the adventure I'm working on for SoE, which means I'll be moving on to another setting book, this time featuring dwarves and cave goblins (night goblins). I've promised a Runesmith class, so I' going to have to figure that out.
I didn't, no. The adventure I'm working on is taking up my available time. I'm on a Discord for creative types that formed out of a jam though so helping each other out is the name of the game.
