Yeah, I saw that slip case on the preview and I must have it. My precious.

Shadowdark Arcane Library Western Reaches KS

The way Kelsey explained it is that all 6 Cursed Scroll zines are micro settings and thwe Western Reaches campaign setting knits them all together into a whole setting. The books are supposed to be mutually informative. EDIT - Its potentially 8 books, all six zines (3 as-yet unpublished) and...

Different philosophies concerning Rules Heavy and Rule Light RPGs.

The idea that because pure objectivity is impossible that reasonable levels of objectivity cannot be attainted isn't terribly helpful to the topic at hand. How you feel about that is up to you, I'm just talking about the idea, not how you feel about it.

Different philosophies concerning Rules Heavy and Rule Light RPGs.

I think you're trying to apply some kind of academic standard of objectivity to a topic that doesn't require it. Or, perhaps more pointedly, it feels like you're aiming at 'technically correct' (no offense meant). The fact that human judgement probably cannot be entirely and completely without...

Different philosophies concerning Rules Heavy and Rule Light RPGs.

Consistency comes from following the fiction and taking the effort to adjudicate honestly and without bias. I know that works in rules light games because I do it all the time.

New Year, New Campaign: Crown and Skull

This looks awesome! Let us know how 'Warhammer-y' it feels in play (I mean that as a good thing).

Crones, Hedge Witches, Cunning Folk, Wise Women - Help needed for an RPG game

There's a great book on real-world magic translated for an RPG called Codex Superno, for a historical game called Codex Martialis. The research for the book is top-notch. I own a bunch of the stuff for the game, including this book.

Crones, Hedge Witches, Cunning Folk, Wise Women - Help needed for an RPG game

I'm in the middle of reading Witchcraft and Secret Societies of Rural England by Nigel Pennick. Not a gaming book, but full of all kinds of awesome potentially gameable content in the vein your looking for.

Different philosophies concerning Rules Heavy and Rule Light RPGs.

Oh yeah, but not as crunchy as char gen, that's all.

Different philosophies concerning Rules Heavy and Rule Light RPGs.

This is quite true, and I say that as someone who has no skin in the game. The crunch rep Hero gets is definitely based on char gen moreso than play at the table.

GMs: How Much Do You Curate Your Adventures To Your Specific PCs, Mechanically Speaking

I don't, generally, do this at all. That's not a value judgement or anything, I just don't do it.
  13. Fenris-77

Different philosophies concerning Rules Heavy and Rule Light RPGs.

Most rules heavy games have exactly the same ability to allow players to attempt most anything as rules light games do (i.e there is a fairly robust basic task and adjudication mechanic), but I find in practice that doesn't happen. The more rules a game has the more likely it is, IMO anyway...

Different philosophies concerning Rules Heavy and Rule Light RPGs.

I don't think crunch better defines things, it just provides specific mechanical support for more things. You might argue that provides some indexing as to what kinds of activities the designer expects to be germane to the setting and genre, but that's not the same as what's possible. I also...

Don’t reinvent the wheel, being well versed in different RPGs

The remaster of Into the Odd is a gorgeous book with cracking good layout and design.

Don’t reinvent the wheel, being well versed in different RPGs

What's the goal here? If it's to read about lots of different systems that do their particular thing well I'd add Blades in the Dark and Trophy Gold to the list, and probably recommend Swords of the Serpentine as the Gumshoe book. That's off the top of my head anyway. On the OSR front Into the...

Shadowdark: tips for a new GM?

Ok, so right now the document has six new ancestries, two new class, six new backgrounds (the AN ones, converted), and 18 converted AN monster stat blocks. Plus some assorted conversion notes. Plus a fancy cover that I'll eventually incorporate:

Shadowdark: tips for a new GM?

Off the top of my head I don't remember. I was going to do all of them though. Its quick, no reason not to.

Shadowdark: tips for a new GM?

No, I didn't think it was copywrite appropriate. If you want to DM me I can send you the document. I'll be honest, there's more in it to covert ADF to Shadowdark to use in Ave Nox than anything else. My plan was to combine ADF, AN, and the desert themes Cursed Scroll as the basis of a larger...
