    D&D 5E (2014) Weighing in on 5e

Pre-4E D&D editions had fixed monster/player math. I.e. defenses did not scale with level, only attack bonuses. So there was no relative equivalency between monster and player advancement as you levelled up, at least not in the sense that 4E brought it. In 4E, you need to roll, say, 10 and up to...

    Autolevelling Items

Just as a side note to the entire bonuses approach: in one campaign, I included bonuses, but only to a certain extent. My campaigns don't go beyond early paragon levels, so in essence I give out 1 fixed +1 bonus to all defenses and attacks at level 5, and then items that give +1 or +2 (and...

    D&D 5E (2014) Weighing in on 5e

I agree with SpydersWebbing that the entire ascending math is really useless and burdensome. I mean, each PC regularly increases his attacks and defenses of a certain value while all monsters increase their attacks and defenses about the same rate. But the PCs' math is only relevant compared to...

Monte Cooks First Legends and Lore

The problem with this is that some monsters would simply not hit some players - never. So your high AC fighter could move against the minions and standards in a room and be invincible to their attacks. Not desirable. On the other hand, if the DM has to roll the dice, he'll hit the fighter...

Monte Cooks First Legends and Lore

This is an interesting point, but I'd probably rewrite it as follows: players who want to find stuff should play rogues, and players who want to search for stuff should play fighters or wizards. Heh. I think it depends on how the find stuff skill works. If your find-stuff-rogue arrives in a...

    Deck of Many Things Replacement

How was the deck used? If you include it as a treasure without thinking more of it and expect nothing different than when you drop a +3 sword, sure, the DM's in for a surprise.

Encounter - good ally for some ogres?

Can to share your encounter composition?

    Deck of Many Things Replacement

The Deck is not a campaign killer, but some cards can lead to quests that, if the DM isn't prepared to follow through, will sound pretty hollow. I think it's a great magic item. Read it with an open mind, see the possibilities that come with it, it was a high point of an old campaign I DMed for...

Encounter - good ally for some ogres?

A black dragon using ogres as his thugs. A couple of dire bears as pets to the Ogre Chieftain. Slaves to the ogres: orcs and goblins. Did someone say ogre mage? ;-D Minor demons (maybe a quasit, a gnaw demon and a bunch of dretches, if the level fits) that the ogres think they have subdued...

    D&D 3.x 3.5 DM Considering 4E

Does anyone actually believe that this was a legitimate question by the OP? "Scared to do this alone", he says? Sounds kinda trollsome to me.

D&D 4E Using an absolute creature level scale in 4E

Tequila Sunrise: it appears like you went through a thought process very similar to mine, albeit the implementation is not identical. You idea for minions and goons is interesting. I'm not sure I'd use that in my games, but I like what you've done.

D&D 4E Using an absolute creature level scale in 4E

I'd most probably indeed use a soldier to represent a knight. The problem I see with using a higher level soldier to represent a knight on which I want a higher AC is of course that all other defenses go up simultaneously. I guess what I'm saying is that it's OK to play with the math, as long...

D&D 4E Using an absolute creature level scale in 4E

Tnanks for the thoughts and comments everyone. Concerning my statement that the monsters were set in absolute level value in 1E, I don't argue that it's the same as that of the PCs (which it wasn't), but they had an absolute power evaluation in themselves (roman numbered from I to X). There...

D&D 4E Using an absolute creature level scale in 4E

Before 4E: monsters, PCs, everyone was set on an absolute power scale that depended on their level. In 3E that became even more true as rules were set for anyone to be statted in, including commoners who now got levels. You could always compare the power level of two creatures because they both...

    Paladin moral delima

I think the OP visited EnWorld and said "we haven't had a paladin moral dilemna thread for a while, I'll start one". So, hence, as per usual paladin moral dilemna threads: let's imagine a given situation and see if the paladin actually has leeway to decide on how to act, or if he "should be...

    Are "Pretty" Dungeons Better?

As a player and DM, I tend to dislike flat ground maps with rooms all having 20-foot high ceilings. I much better like areas with weird (read: pretty) layouts that include large rooms that span more than one floor, balconies with views over other areas of the dungeons or castle, and a...

    The Quest

I find quests are often simple and straightforward: fetch an item or kill a bad guy. Is that desirable? I can see pros and cons.

    Close Blast 3 question

The rules are not clear-cut on this IMO. With this in mind, I would rule that the breath weapon is emitted from the new golem's position, thus missing some of the PCs, because I feel that in doubt, you need to award your PCs nice effects to their powers instead of finding a way to have the PC...

    Distrusting NPC Issues

I'd like to note as an aside that there's nothing like getting double-crossed by a NPC or having your mother or sister kidnapped, it makes for great drama and it's sure to pull my NPC into the game at full speed. So really, I don't get why people don't want family or don't trust others :)
