Yeah, they're all friends from the same industry. It just happens to be an industry that makes for entertaining game play (millage may vary on how entertaining one finds it, of course, like all forms of entertainment) .

Our current game, the PCs are goblins, protecting their tribe from external threats. Before we started, I had to remind a couple of the players that it isn't really an "evil" campaign. The nearby human colony is a part of a fascist oligarchy and is definitely a threat, a rampaging gnoll band...

Think of it this way: If the item made you immune to magical damage, and your PC buddy just got hit by a mundane sword and a Fireball, would giving him the item heal his Fireball damage?

I prefer to just say skill check should have consequence, one way or the other, rather than associate any negative terms with it. A rogue skilled in lock picking, with the right tools, that has all day to pick a lock, will do so, no roll required (assuming it is pickable in the first place, of...

I see we agree here. I may have misread your post I originally quoted. I just read it as, "if the player can't roll, then he has to try and read the GM's mind," which I don't agree with. But if that's not the case, my bad, carry on.

I'm not sure how my post implies GM/player sparring or player competence, just competence of the PC trained in the skill. If the NPC is a schmuck and the PC is good at spotting cues, I'm going to describe those cues when they try to pull a fast one. If the PC isn't, they don't get those cues...

It's not about ignoring your trained skills, it's about assuming a level of competence from those that are trained in the skills.

Well, it's not the most random sample available, but the char-op threads in the general board for PF2 on Paizo are quickly beginning to outnumber the more interesting ones. And that's the general board, I'm not even bothering looking at the advice board....
