Are Essentials more old school or just a clever marketing ploy?

To be honest, I don't believe that the balance of classes in 4E is totally there in Essentials. Casters seem to be a bit more "powerful" than standard 4E casters. Essentials clerics are getting "abilities" for free that 4E have to "pay" for (i.e., resurrection for one example). The essentials...

Are Essentials more old school or just a clever marketing ploy?

Oh, I completely agree 100%. Compared to older edition, it's not nearly as overpowered/broken. And I would actually compare the runepriest to the earth domain priest, since they do the offensive/defensive with their at-wills and such. And I'm not sure you can "optimize" a runepriest, since...

Are Essentials more old school or just a clever marketing ploy?

Sure, and I am glad to see that we can "disagree" (which again really isn't the word choice I really want to use) without "disagreeing", because you're right, it is a matter of taste. Essentials clerics now have the daily standard ability to resurrect, which was a based off of a (free) ritual...

Are Essentials more old school or just a clever marketing ploy?

And sorry Jack but when you posted: I have to "disagree", which isn't really the word I want to use here. They do feel like the classes of older editions, and that is why I don't like them. When I tried to play a PF rogue, I hated my only real option in combat was "I slash with my sword" or...

    I Hate Bards

Oh, I'm not arguing that point, that to use a power you must have LoS/LoE, I agree 100%. But it is the effect from the power that is in question, and the power does not explicitly say "1 or 2 allies that can be seen in a 5 square radius from the target". The power did hit the target, and the...

    I Hate Bards

I don't think I'm contradicting you here (I hope not, since I snipped the rest of your post!), but according to the Rules Compendium, the user of the teleportation power has to have LoS to the destination, not the recipient. It also states that Neither the user nor the target of the...

What does a slayer fighter lose in the trade-off?

Yeah, what he said. Once an encounter it's basically 2[W] damage, but on average is probably only 2 or 3 points more per hit (if using comparable weapons).

    Eberron: Any new material published?

Tim Waggoner (who wrote the Silver Blade trilogy) has a new Eberron novel coming up in the next few months as well. Looking forward to this one!

    Eberron: Any new material published?

There is a new novel coming out, but there are no new RPG books, most of the material has been DDI. The model all along was to release a setting/player book/module for all the settings (except Dark Sun, since it was a setting/monster book/module).
