4E combat grind but not boring

A 2nd level part should (according to the DMG) be able to handle that encounter (assuming it was level 5 or 6 and the highest monster level was 8) but just barely.

The Grind Problem (My 2 Cents)

Wouldn't it be easier to leave the hit points as is and adjust the AC down so that the party average attack has a 50/50 chance of hitting? In the above case, drop the AC by 5.

[OOC] Heroes of the Middle Reaches : Wandering Star

Blackrat, I've been meaning to ask. Are you intentionally not marking the creatures you've been attacking?

[IC] Wandering Star : Heroes of the Middle Reaches (Part One)

The Sea Devil, beset by blow after blow, finally appears to begin showing some concern for his strategic position. He gurgles an order to the beleaguered hafling "We must find an opening and escape with our prize." Your turn, master of phantasms.

Go ahead and make the rolls yourself until IC is back up.

The Hafling staggers, blood gushing from a sizzling wound to his belly and chest. Even he can tell that he's not long for this world. Your turn.

The Grind Problem (My 2 Cents)

Who said anything about my monsters just standing there? My encounters are (as near as I can tell) about as dynamic as they should be. Players and monsters are running all over the place. That being said, I haven't provided a lot of potentially damaging terrain in my encounters so far. Perhaps...

The Grind Problem (My 2 Cents)

Fair enough. I was just being generous anyway. I have yet to run an n+4 encounter that wasn't deep into grindspace. Good point. I'd completely forgotten about that, and they can make quite the difference. I've toyed with the idea of a house rule giving "Lead The Attack" the reliable keyword...

The Grind Problem (My 2 Cents)

Heh. I know what a random walk is. Monte Carlo simulations are the same thing. We studied those pretty extensively in my graduate level statistical mechanics course. I just never thought to apply it to rpg mechanics before.

The Sea Devil hisses in rage at Varilar and prepares his counterstrike. Your turn.

The Grind Problem (My 2 Cents)

I really need to get my blog set-up. This post is way too long for an ENWorld thread. Oh well. I've been running a 4E game since late May and started significantly modding 3E to be more like 4E around March. The "grindyness" of actual 4E (didn't see this problem with my modded version of 3E for...

[OOC] Heroes of the Middle Reaches : Wandering Star

Regarding Cause Fear, does the movement take place on Ranver's turn or the Sea Devil's turn. Also, no duration is listed in the power. Does it only work once or does it last until the end of the encounter?

[IC] Wandering Star : Heroes of the Middle Reaches (Part One)

For a moment the Sea Devil looks quizzically at Ranver and his outstretched spear. Then, he gasps and the rows of spines around his ears and down his back bristle up and turn bright crimson. He shouts a hissing, gurgling "YOU CANNOT KNOW!!!" of abject fear and throws up his arms as if to shield...

Yes you did. My bad. He still hits, though just barely. Take your immediate interrupt attack against him if you'd like.

[IC] Wandering Star : Heroes of the Middle Reaches (Part One)

My apologies for the delay everyone. The scaled horror hisses with glee as he and the hafling attack the paladin as one and strike true. 8 damage from the hafling's attack. 15 damage from the sahuagin and you are marked. Your turn.

[IC] Wandering Star : Heroes of the Middle Reaches (Part One)

For some reason I thought that Varilar was expecting Zarathas to shift. Now matter. Neither Varilar nor Zarathas are able to penetrate the creature's defenses. Horto is able to score and does so with such ease that the creature's faith in its supremacy is shaken to the core. Your turn.

Did you shift in order to provide flanking for Varilar?
