delericho I just checked the Paizo site, and it looks like they actually added some things in the year since I tried the BB.
With that, I respectfully leave this side debate as any additional points I make are off topic and potentially fall into "edition wars".
OnTopic: I hope this set is a...
B3 Palace of the Silver Princess
B4 The Lost City
B5 Horror on the Hill
Quite a few more, but hopefully this is a decent enough selection to contrast it against a Beginner Box that was a single-use game from a company that had no intentions of supporting it as anything but a gateway to a...
If there isn't much replayability in the Starter, they will end up alienating even more potential players. The starter should be the real game, not some downscaled version. It should be usable with any adventure/module made for DDN. It should be fun enough that people WANT to start expanding...
I find it amazing the PFBB is held up as the gold standard for starter sets. IMHO, that distinction goes to the 81 and 83 Basic boxes. They were actual games, with supporting adventures and expansions.
As we gather here and debate the "leaked" price, how many gamers have already shrugged their shoulders and adjusted their budget? It will be what it will be. I just hope it has value in its content, although no two people can agree on "content value" either.
Watching the debates here, I find...
Unfortunately, US teachers are usually people that have never been outside the education system (other than a mall clerk during uni). Our youth have little chance to learn from someone with practical experience until college.
If it is a classic PHB (1/3 of the core), a little indigestion. I have a suspicion that the "Essentials" model worked for them and this book might be a 1/2 or even 1/1 for a core game. Either way, its the first edition I've wanted to play since around 1985. They'll get my $50.
And some assessment testing (mostly the ones that reward the teacher or school in some manner) create an environment where instructional time is dedicated to preparing for the test
Yeah, the Shrieker may have been a poor example. In B/X the asterisk is a special abilities bonus for XP, but the book doesn't give any directive to change the monster level based on that. It does say they can be found 2 levels higher or lower than their HD, but the DM should adjust the...
Wow! Your timezone is waaaay ahead of mine.
You know, the B&N slip may also have been a way to give us a schedule without commiting to a schedule. Not that the internet would catch on fire if they missed a tentative date or anything.
No "monster level" in B/X. An example stat is
"Shrieker"
Armor Class:7.....................No Appearing: 1-8(0)
Hit Dice:3.............................Save As: Fighter 1
Then move, morale, attack, damage, treasure type, alignment
With a $20 MSRP and the distribution network of a huge toy/games company, I imagine these will show up at Toys R Us, Target, FYE, Walmart, etc. In those stores, dice would be expected.
So true. Kids already roleplay, they use their imagination more than most adults allow themself to. Rolling their own PC allows them to build that persona that is already within them.
