WotC may have sent the Pinkertons to a magic leakers home. Update: WotC confirms it and has a response.

Thank you. That was very well thought out. I get that a lot of people may have some emotional connection with certain entities (someone mentioned being from Pennsylvania and the trauma that the area has suffered due to Pinkertons), but it's good to see that people can think of ways of getting...

Morals are so subjective. Also, I enjoy a lively discussion. I think I will continue to participate in what has so far been a very respectful discussion from everyone. You are free to ignore my amoral posts, though. I'm not everyone's cup of coffee.

No, what you are doing is providing a clear statement of what you would do... partially. Saying, "Boss, I don't think sending the Pinkertons to this guy's house is a good idea," is different than doing nothing. You are being specific and clear. I forgot his name was not.

I'd like to poll streamers to determine the veracity of your claim.

So you're just going to put a bunch of employees at private investigator firms out on the streets with no jobs? That's pretty harsh. But would you view the legal threats are the appropriate things for WoTC to do? If they had sent this guy a legal letter, would you have been okay with that?

I teach, as one of my jobs, and I have no supervisors. I'm my own boss for my other job. My boss is a terrible person. Two different things, though. One is not doing your job. The other is being upset at something in the workplace?

True, but in that case, couldn't we also hold YouTubers to the same standards as journalism outfits? Ha! Jokes on you. I have no morals. Wait, are we talking about streamers or WoTC here?

Not doing something is not doing something. What action would you take? I'm going to assume there are several jobs with a variety of responsibilities available at WoTC. You may not consider it a big deal, but a company that has spent money on marketing will. It's weird to get fired for not...

In general, sure, but is it the same for YouTubers? They get a lot of their income from advertising and sponsorship, which are based on viewership and subscribers. But shouldn't we take into consideration the manner in which the "scoop" was achieved? Just for argument's sake, let's assume that...

Too late!!!! I don't think streamers would consider the harm they suffer to be "mundane." They might get scooped, but I'd argue they get scooped because those companies have formed strong relations with the individuals that are doing the scooping and allowing them to do so. Also, people file...

Humans are stupid. We do things because we are used to doing it the same way. Progress and change takes a long time and a lot of effort. When you have half your population actively fighting that progress, it takes longer. So basically, the human species will die before we manage to figure out...

Wait, but isn't that heavy handed for a guy who "mistakenly" got these? I mean, Pinkertons spoke to him and gave him a number to call. Isn't it worse to have to go to court and pay a lawyer to defend you?

No, I never said it was heavy handed. Actually, I guess to be clear, I'm arguing that this was not as heavy handed as people are making it out to be. No, I have the misfortune of teaching research to university students. D&D is my escape into a world where I don't constantly want to strangle...

Never said it was effective. It's just what's done. What would your suggstion be? What would you have done if you were running WoTC and had to deal with this issue?

maybe separate that from the current events. Sequence effects is a real thing. It can make effects seem more significant than they are. In this case it can make a company look worse or the viewer more biased towards one opinion or another. We keep buying products from a company that would...

Yes. That's what typically happens. You do something you shouldn't. You get caught. You get some type of aversive consequence. Others see what happened to you, and they don't do it to avoid similar consequences. Have you ever watched a court case where someone gets out of hand and the judge...

Lawyers are the worst people. Getting a letter from a lawyer can be just as intimidating if not more so. Those cease and desist letters can be quite threatening with the claims of potential lawsuits. Also, even if they don't have an actual case, doesn't mean they won't claim they do. Look at...

WotC may have sent the Pinkertons to a magic leakers home. Update: WotC confirms it and has a response.

What "power" are you referring to? The power to get their products, which were misappropriated (maybe not stolen, but acquired under circumstances which should not have occurred) by others? So out of curiosity, what would you propose that would be acceptable to both sides? On one side we have...
