D&D 5E (2014) The Object Interaction Rule, and how it's changed our action economy

I have not found the interact making much difference or a change in the dynamic between the players & the DM. The interact equates to general minor action usage in 4e so I am used to that. Some DMs can be very pernickety about it, some more relaxed. I do think the action economy is very good -...

    D&D 5E (2014) Bugbear Zombies

Why 14 AC? 10 seems more in keeping with the other zombies (well 8 but he's strangely nimble) Also WIS 7 is -2 so should be +0 save & 8 Passive perception. Seems like a reasonable interpolation.

    D&D 5E (2014) Do you ever create a PC off a mini?

This one - 4e rogue with all his powers re-flavoured to use the items he is festooned with. Ah how I miss 4e.

    D&D 5E (2014) Why does 5E SUCK?

https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/9209/ticket-ride https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/421/1830-railways-robber-barons They are as the man says railway building games. TTR is super popular - good but pretty light. 1830 is deep & punishing.

    D&D 5E (2014) Why does 5E SUCK?

I feel 5e is probably a good game but it's A Ticket to Ride & I want to play 1830 (or Age of Sigmar / Warmachine)

D&D 5E (2014) How do you work multiple opponents with Lair Actions?

This must surely be a ruling thing. There is no way I am trying to administer 10+ lair actions. I would let the boss have them & maybe improve them based on the minions. If there was no boss just power up the lair actions a bit. (Is it in a module? I believe you are supposed to use them all...

D&D 5E (2014) Ranger Extra Attack and Horde Breaker

    1) Consistency - it will happen almost every round as you can set it up yourself with your first attack or just keep beating on what someone else has wounded. It has 2 chances to trigger or more if you use twf. 2) Focused damage - it can be on your main target, not just on some random other...

D&D 5E (2014) Ranger Extra Attack and Horde Breaker

I disagree on the spacing - within 5' means no more than a 5' gap between individuals. In TotM they may be out of arms reach of one another. (On a grid I would probably say adjacent squares though - you could argue it either way - weird difference. If it proved to hard to get to trigger I would...

D&D 5E (2014) Encounter difficulty: how to fix it.

It's less cumbersome than CR which added logarithmically. The fact it's worse than the 4e EL is due to the vagaries of the CRs themselves. Granularity is an issue especially at low value. I am fine with a bit of eyeballing & fudging - it's a guideline explicitly afterall.

D&D 5E (2014) Encounter difficulty: how to fix it.

This exercise highlights the whole mess of the encounter building system which is predicate on what I consider s design error in the game (not one that effects game play directly so it's not a biggy). There are two factors why having more monsters makes for a harder fight. One is "Lanchester"...

    D&D 5E (2014) [+] What are your favorite things about 5e?

Cunning Action. The general removal of bitty effects for big effects. Cunning action is this; so is Rangers automatically tracking things & fewer but "bigger" feats & scaling spells. I guess Advantage is too though that bonus is so huge it is a bit worrying. Solid class design. Most...

    D&D 4E The Best Thing from 4E

I did say "of course this is the same for any edition" :p Nice to see the half life maths though. 4e did insulate you from death through randomness to a large extent - crits or fluffed saves vs Death which meant that most of the deaths I saw were in TPKs (I think I saw more TPKs than instances...

    D&D 4E The Best Thing from 4E

I think the tactical depth of 4e is a bit of a chimera as PCs win pretty much all the time. If players are terrible then the DM will go easier on them & if they are elite ninjas he will up the difficulty, either consciously or not. Of course this is the same for any edition - the alternative is...

    D&D 5E (2014) Why does 5E SUCK?

I haven't played 1e in over 30 years but I don't remember anything like that happening. I remember a TPK caused by a roof collapse in one of the tournament dungeons but that was triggered by a fireball so must have been in combat so not sure if that counts. I did not play it much - I moved on...

    D&D 5E (2014) Why does 5E SUCK?

At the risk of swirling down an overly specific drain hole these are usually narrated is such a way that they do not lead to massive HP loss by multiple characters. (I am playing Dark Sun right now & of course as it's 4e there are lots of effects that drain healing surges but not much direct...

    D&D 5E (2014) Why does 5E SUCK?

It's the boring bits between fights. Seriously I asked months ago what the exploration pillar was as I am not sure there is much of it in games I play or run, probably as I don't think I enjoy it. OTOH there is lot of stuff usually that is neither combat nor interaction eg planning a...

    D&D 5E (2014) Why does 5E SUCK?

I broadly agree with the analysis but I am not sure it's so important 1) With bounded accuracy baseline effectiveness is not very polarised. Blagging the DM & rolling well will get you a long way. Everyone can contribute quite well in general non combat situations. This is less the case after...

    D&D 5E (2014) Why does 5E SUCK?

Because honestly I never see it happen. Odd bits of damage yes, not massive HP loss to multiple characters. There was this one time with a 3e rogue who was trying to open a trapped object & we healed him up each time he failed - the days of wands of CLW, so very 3e.
