Low magic vs. magic as a plot device

Okay, an answer Good point, I'll try to stay out of the tangential conversation. I didn't really illustrate it very well, but the mechanic I'm using thus far has worked to a certain degree of success. Using magic is, ultimately, harmful to the user. However, I'm realizing that this is...

    Encounters with the Supernatural

Deja Vu all over again... Discover magazine had a good piece on deja vu a few years back. The explanation - theoretical, like all explanations for the phenomena - was that when the brain is storing and shaping a new memory it sometimes 'misfires' and confuses the new, short term memory with...

    How to make Zombies Deadlier?

Zombies You can also take a cue from the movie 28 Days Later where the zombies were a sort of human/undead hybrid called the Infected. They were fast, strong, unthinking creatures, but best of all, they were (of course) infectious! That meant whenever you can into close combat with the...

Low magic vs. magic as a plot device

Low magic Fun how low magic conversation invariably devolve into a conversation about high vs. low magic. I really don't see the point - different campaigns support different systems. My campaign is extremely low magic, and currently uses a handicapped version of Arcana Unearthed's magic...

    Training horse to warhorse

I'm comfortable with bending or breaking the rules to facilitate roleplaying, but several of the posts here have reinforced my belief that this would be rather unbalancing of me to allow. The main problem isn't just the fact that the PC could buy cheap horses and train them into warhorses in a...

    Training horse to warhorse

Dressage My aunt trains horses as an all-encompassing hobby and she, too, is in awe of dressage trained horses. It's really the art of making every movement and thought of your horse yours. A good link for additional reading: http://www.worlddressage.com/history.htm I have In The Saddle...

    Training horse to warhorse

I usually research this stuff myself, but I've been strapped for time so I'm going to rely on this fine community for an answer. I have a player that believes that training his light horse the attack 'trick' using Handle Animal bestows upon the horse all abilities and skills of a warhorse...

20th lvl Wizard needs spell suggestions

Sorry, haven't been on the board for a day. It's in Arcane Strife. Excellent spells if you want brutal, no-holds-barred magic. You can get the PDF at RPGNow.com

20th lvl Wizard needs spell suggestions

Osseus Eruptus from Arcane Strife. It's a 9th level spell that, barring a Fortitude save, forces the victim's skeleton to erupt from his body and serve the spell caster as an undead slave. If the victim is a high level fighter type, the skeleton is also wielding a Maggotblade - a particularly...

    Grim-n-Gritty: Revised and Simplified

The only case where I can see these rules enforce a "GM vs. Players" environment is when the GM is attempting to punish players with a set of rules. Otherwise, if your campaign is a grim-n-gritty one, where's the conflict? So big creatures kill small creatures more easily - that's a foundation...

    Grim-n-Gritty: Revised and Simplified

Playtesting Okay Ken, A few playtest scenarios, and I have to agree with your more recent assessment - DEX is a better melee attack stat than STR. It seems to balance size differences better, and allows 'dodgy' classes the ability to last a whole six seconds longer in combat (better than...

    Grim-n-Gritty: Revised and Simplified

Honestly, if you can get everyone to at least give the rules a shot you may be in for a pleasant surprise. The rules are tough on PCs, but they're also very tough on NPCs, which can bring a real sense of excitement to the game. If you're smart, you can take on way more than you could in the...

    Grim-n-Gritty: Revised and Simplified

Now, that's just funny. I use the original G&G rules with many AU variant rules and all of the AU spell system. In my mind they're an excellent match, as the spell system is more flexible and less oriented towards combat spells. That doesn't mean the system is less deadly, per se. With...

    Grim-n-Gritty: Revised and Simplified

That reminds me, I've been meaning to say 'thanks' for the last year. My group has been using G&G modified rules for the last eight months, and it has worked extremely well. The players are very happy with the system (as it's more lethal for the bad guys too) and everyone has been much more...

    Programs to organize campaigns

Is there a list of which of these features would have been included in e-tools anywhere? Or a list of adventure requirements, like the list you've started but I'll assume is incomplete? It occurs to me that I'd like something like that as well, and it's certainly within my capability to...

Laptop DM - What do I need?

See now, that's exactly what I want! I've been using CC2 in the most obvious way possible, without really looking into the features that would draw me into the product more. Thanks for the inspiration; I'm going to go through the tutorial again tonight.

Laptop DM - What do I need?

Well, I've never seen that before! I own CC2 and like it, but have never felt completely comfortable with it. It certainly is powerful, but I've been looking for something a bit more campaign oriented. I'm interested in seeing what Dundjinni can do, as well.

Laptop DM - What do I need?

Um, yeah, I joined EN World in November so I could recommend DM Genie to one guy two months later. I would put this under 'paranoid with too much free time'. And my quote you abused above was in reference to you unfairly bashing a product with a non-fact. I certainly can't speak for the...

Laptop DM - What do I need?

Not like I'm an official DMGenie spokesman or anything, but it doesn't blindly stack spell effects. In the case of Bull's Strength, you can have the spell as a condition or not -- no stacking. I can't speak for every effect, but the program does seem to stack intelligently to some degree.

Laptop DM - What do I need?

Meh. You're not wrong, it's just a matter of preference. My players take combat and rules very seriously, and they actually *like* seeing me look things up when there's even a hint of discord. And, as I said before, there's no longer any 'flipping through books'. It's right there in front of...
