Geek Confessional Thread 2024 [NOW 2025!]

I feel if you take the monolithic juggernaut of D&D out of the industry, we'll be buying rpgs basically on Etsy. It boggles my mind, because I feel if D&D were to bite it now and WotC vanish, who's going to pick up the infrastructure and continue things on the level of Gencon - $75M economic...

    MCDM Update: The Power Roll

I respect and like Matt Colville. I get that a lot of this began in the uproar of anti-WotC becoming anti-5e/etc (we won't debate that here). What I am seeing from this video is... it's like we're watching systems be pushed together. As soon as he talked about James saying the 2d6+X roll would...

Worlds of Design: The Improv Imbalance

I think 'read aloud text' can also help in a post-mortem if the players complain about not having any idea about a certain clue, if you can go back and show that this tapestry was absolutely referenced in the text and so they may not have needed as many encounters to realize they needed the...

D&D General D&D Luminary Jim 'Drawmij' Ward Passes

I am thankful for his work and his influence. I love his work. And even in that picture, he looks like The Best Uncle, yknow, the one who secretly taught the kids to play D&D or let them sit in at a probably-age-inappropriate game session when he wasn't sneaking them beers behind the garage at...

D&D General Explain Bounded Accuracy to Me (As if I Was Five)

I had come around to agreeing with designer John Wick about 'balance'. A lot of times, when people complain about balance, what they're REALLY complaining about is spotlight. Of course you seem underpowered and underbalanced if the GM never lets you have the moment to shine or another PC does...

James Introcaso talks about the Power Roll, a change to the MCDM resolution system.

I agree there was no grift. I'm sorry if you thought I was implying there was. My point is that when a designer says it's open to change, but their first design promise is '[they] want to have no attack rolls'. Promise or idea unveiling. It would be equivalent to me as if Wizards when...

James Introcaso talks about the Power Roll, a change to the MCDM resolution system.

The sense I get is that the game isn't going to be as revolutionary as people expected, given Colville's track record. Imagine if someone you respected as a designer decided, during a bout of anti-D&D ranting online, to announce he was coming out with a game that would be monumentally...

D&D General Interesting New DM Trick

I like this system. I also like milestone. One suggestion I'd seen here years back was that for the gold to count as XP, it has to be spent, usually frivolously. The entire reason being that that's what kept the Conan/Grey Mouser etc 'feel' - yes, they'd get rich, but they'd piss it all away...

D&D 5E (2014) What if everyone in the setting had a [Class]?

Actually, I'd push back on the idea a thieves' guild is all thieves. Maybe some are, but I dare say successful thieves guilds have plenty of diverse classes and races. They even addressed this back in the 2e book for Complete Book of Thieves. The guild is for getting rich - you absolutely...

D&D 5E (2014) What if everyone in the setting had a [Class]?

I don't know that I agree everyone should have a class. I do agree that AD&D was lousy with everyone seeming to have a class. What I liked was, in the old Grey Book Forgotten Realms, they break down the population of Shadowdale. In the breakdown, some people had classes, but more often...

D&D 5E (2014) How to run Death House without killing your entire party

My old GM ran this as a prologue to a non-Barovia horror D&D campaign. The PCs were orphans at the orphanage. We all were the Losers like in It. There were a brother and sister NPC - the only siblings. Bullies challenged us to enter the Wycker House. It was horrible and haunted and no one...

D&D 5E (2014) Would you require a roll for this?

I like this. I feel like there's a lot of ... feelings.. about Gygaxian dungeoncrawling, but I feel this is something that seemed to have come up in play in those games, which caused Gygax to get more clever and create new issues, which caused the players to get more clever, etc. Adversarial...

D&D 5E (2014) Would you require a roll for this?

That gave me an idea for a 'fun' gas trap. A gas trap in two stages: stage one gets fired off and exposes the party. Nothing happens. Wow, that could've been bad, wonder what that was all about. A little further on, someone triggers stage two of the gas: something that sets off some weird...

    Your best live action Superman?

Y'know... it never clicked for me, until this conversation, the time that Supes takes in this scene before dealing with Zod. Even going through the pretend-surrender, taking the hand... this is some Snyder crap right here but with nostalgia and a heroic upswell, we forget this is Superman...

    Your best live action Superman?

This whole movie... what could've been. I always love going back and listening to Kevin Smith tell this story on An Evening with Kevin Smith. What could go wrong on a movie where the writing was being guided by a man who started out as Barbara Streisand's hairdresser? I think the three rules...

D&D 5E (2014) [+] Rangers should have monster fighting spells equivalent to Paladin's Smite spells. Discuss!

Maybe we should go back to first edition Rangers? Bonus damage against 'giant' type monsters (+1 hp/level, with no cap) - maybe even expand that to Beasts? Spells? When they get them, they're limited to up to 3rd level druid spells and 2nd level mage spells.

D&D General As old as D&D
