D&D 5E (2014) When an entire campaign comes down to one roll

Sounds like everyone had a good time and a lot of fun, so the DM did a good job. I love it when 1s have consequences and the drow was an idiot. All good fun.

    D&D 5E (2014) On meaningless restrictions

Ultimately, restrictions are what give the game its shape and feel. If you have no restrictions, then it’s up to the individual table to decide what exists, what doesn’t, and how it all inter-relates. For example - does your world have chainmail wearing spellcasters? It is the things that are...

D&D as humanocetric ... or not?

I'd read his statements at their face and in context. When he wrote that people were still just learning D&D and it's very good advice to make your world humanocentric since, as he states, we are humans and it's much easier to do the fantasy and magic bits if we're not always worrying about all...

    D&D 5E (2014) Could 5E Use A Branded Magazine In Stores (Again)?

It doesn't matter that there are magazines that make money. There is no enough money in it, nor does it help promote the game enough, for the investment required. There are better things for WotC to spend development effort and money on with much higher returns on investment. Now, if they want...

D&D 5E (2014) Do you use XPs or Milestones?

My favourite system that I've never actually used goes all the way back to Dave Arneson. He'd award XP for class-specific in game spending. So a cleric was building a temple, a fighter carousing, etc. It would be nice to have something like this where it's still XP-for-gold, but awarded when the...

D&D 5E (2014) Do you like dungeon crawls?

Big Dungeons can be awesome exploration of all sorts of weird environments, puzzles, and roleplaying to pit factions against each other. can be boring smash-the-door murder hobo with no logical sense Cities can be awesome exploration of all sorts of interesting districts with intrigue and...

D&D 5E (2014) Do you use XPs or Milestones?

I'm a bit late to this party, so apologies if this was already mentioned. To remove the DM fiat, how about you award the standard 'XP per adventuring day' each session? Should level up every 2-3 sessions.

D&D 5E (2014) Do you like dungeon crawls?

Having run a published mega-dungeon I would say that it takes work to make a good dungeon. It needs to be designed more like a city with distinct districts and factions as well as highways and multiple entrances that allow players to quickly reach an area they want to explore next. It should be...

    D&D 5E (2014) Could 5E Use A Branded Magazine In Stores (Again)?

Even if WotC could make a profit from a print magazine, I'd be very surprised if it would make enough to make it worthwhile. There are much better ways for WotC to spend their money to increase D&D sales.

D&D 5E (2014) Anna Meyer has just Put out her Latest Greyhawk Map Update

All the Rajs southwest of the sea of dust; the 'former lands of xxxxx' in the Amedio Jungle. Anna's pretty thorough so I'm wondering where those lands came into being.

    D&D 5E (2014) Could 5E Use A Branded Magazine In Stores (Again)?

I think the best option would be for someone in the dmsguild community create a monthly set of collected articles and make it available for print on demand. I have a bunch of OSR magazines from lulu.com I got that way.

    D&D 5E (2014) Could 5E Use A Branded Magazine In Stores (Again)?

Articles on a website achieves the same goal and is so cheap it can be made free for consumers. Kids will find the website and go from there. Personally, I'd love to see more columns with regular features like the more popular dragon articles.

On Magic Users and Darts: What's Up With That?

No idea where it came from, but I'd hazard a guess that it was to give an MU a bit more choice than daggers. Darts are far cheaper, weigh less and can be thrown farther than daggers. There was probably someone in Gary Gygax's campaign at some point who wanted a ranged-attack only MU and didn't...

The D&D Edition Complexity Thread- How do you order Edition Complexity?

See Dungeons & Dragons Basic Set - Wikipedia These are all versions of Basic D&D. Holmes is the first 'basic' D&D after Original Dungeons & Dragons (OD&D). B/X is Basic/Expert which is the second basic edition. BECMI is Basic/Expert/Companion/Master/Immortal which was later collected together...

D&D 5E (2014) Anna Meyer has just Put out her Latest Greyhawk Map Update

Yay! I still have my old 576CY maps from the days she had it hosted on a torrent, but it's great to see her giving this version another update.

    D&D 5E (2014) Am I no longer WoTC's target audience?

My only point is that THAC0 wasn't a good solution. Much better was the Target20 system I referenced, which is equivalent to ascending AC introduced by 3e but has the benefit of being backward compatible and involves adding smaller numbers so it is cognitively faster than the current system. For...

D&D General No Fixed Location -- dynamically rearranging items, monsters, and other game elements in the interests of storytelling

I’m out. I’m tired of repeating myself that there’s nothing wrong with either approach. Cheers.

The D&D Edition Complexity Thread- How do you order Edition Complexity?

As an aside, in older rules you generally never wanted the DM to tell you to roll dice because that meant you could fail. In new games, you always want to roll because it means you can bypass having to convince the DM your idea will work.
