That's funny 'money grabbing' and 'rpg company' in the same sentence. Neither company makes a lot of money off D&D or Pathfinder. Employees of Paizo would probably make more money if the company was incorporated as a non-profit.

You can figure out the odds of each value, then roll percentiles or even d1000 and lookup the result in your chart.

I havn't looked closely at Traveller d20, but I know the original Traveller could be used for what you have in mind.

I think sales dropped for a combination of reasons... 1) economy 2) saturation 3) Cancelation/changing of DDM 4) 4e (split the D&D community, so all those funky 4e monsters they made were not desirable to those that stuck with 3.5e) I am not sure how they can be successful with re-introducing...
