Off to see the Wizards: The day that WotC showed me D&D 5th Edition

I LOVE IT! I'm thrilled on a number of fronts, and I'd like to articulate them. 1) COURAGE - to admit that the brand is worth walking away from 4e 2) Communication - what a way to make an announcement! About damn time! When 4e was announced, after being specifically told it WOULD NOT BE, I...

D&D 5E (2014) What big thing is supposed to be next week?

So here would be the most EPIC things I could conceive: If you can't beat 'em, join 'em: World of Warcraft TRPG produced by WoTC If you're sick of losing, beat 'em at their own game: WoTC announces a partnership with a major MMO distributor, D&D MMO v2.0 REUNIFY TO GROW! - OGL updated to all...

A design goal: making different races FEEL different.

I think this would be very interesting. You can see/discuss more about how they handled races in Heroes of Neverwinter on this thread:http://www.enworld.org/forum/general-rpg-discussion/315585-heroes-neverwinter-5e-preview.html Personally, from a design standpoint, I'm excited by games that...

Heroes of Neverwinter as 5e Preview?

Thanks jasmin1234! Have you ever tried playing HoN on FB? What were your thoughts? Would a simpler game like this translate to the tabletop for you?

Wow! Paradigm shifting post. If I can XP you, I will. Yes! That! Make healing work like a skill challenge throughout an adventure. Bam!

Great point, Rechan. The "pre-built" customization of HoN and a simple game app this may make sense, but for a tabletop rpg, you may want to have a more "open" class/level build system that allows for more flexibility in character design.

Heroes of Neverwinter as 5e Preview?

Rechan! It is good to hear from you, and thanks for your thoughts here I completely agree that a "simpler" version of the game which reduces feats usefulness helps to illustrate that they may not be needed. This inhereent bonus thought illustrates that point. You could live without...

Heroes of Neverwinter as 5e Preview?

Greetings Johnny3D3D! Thanks for joining in, and I appreciate your sentiments. I think it's clear that there good aspects here, but this wouldn't be the game for everyone. The comment "healing is now the adventure" goes like this. You will take between two and six hits per encounter in a 4...

Heroes of Neverwinter as 5e Preview?

This certainly adds to the elements that a D&D game would benefit from. A richer reward system for "heroic" adventure that the DM could VERY quickly adjust any existing adventure "on the fly" and make it challenging. Even to players of different levels! My friend Earl from Amorphous Blobcast...

Put on your Superhero thinking cap for me!

To challenge the unknown, you must be able to challenge the limits of the human condition. Extreme like extreme sports enthusiasts and masters. Cliffdiver - extreme rock climber, skier, surfer, skateboarder, motor biker, pilot, mountaineer. There's nothing "UP" or "FAST" he can't handle like...

Heroes of Neverwinter as 5e Preview?

Here's an example for my friend (Psi)SeveredHead to illustrate playing with varying levels. I just played a Level 3 adventure. I used a 3rd Cleric, a 4th Wizard, a 9th rogue, and a 10th fighter. Because I was "heavy loaded" at the top, I chose the most difficult setting for the dungeon -...

Heroes of Neverwinter as 5e Preview?

My apologies, a few quick-handed errors on my part: You are correct the class in the game is titled rogue, not thief. The cleric's at-will is actually referred to as Righteous Strike. All classes get "encounter" powers starting at 1st, and one of the cleric's is Lance of Faith. One of the...

Heroes of Neverwinter as 5e Preview?

(Psi)SeveredHead welcome to the conversation! Thanks for not beating the horse on the computer game not being the TRPG. I completely agree this is obviously a simpler format for FB and for computer game. But that's not the point. What if, just IF, it's informing a new paradigm? It's an...

Heroes of Neverwinter as 5e Preview?

ggroy - the fighter is the clear tank The tank can soak up damage with more hit points than other characters, and also are the ONLY class to have their own second wind, and boundless endurance is a healing buff through regeneration. There are NO marking effects. The game seems to automate...

Heroes of Neverwinter as 5e Preview?

Welcome to the discussion hopeless! Thanks for your thoughts and insights to the game. I played a fighter and wizard, so I wasn't aware of that difference about the cleric's holy symbol. I've not branched into using the "post to your wall" method, because I didn't want to burden the majority...

Heroes of Neverwinter as 5e Preview?

Great point ggroy, I hadn't thought of that! It is more simpler a version like HoFL. The wizard has a ranged attack (crossbow) and an at will of magic missile (no choice) at the beginning. They will also likely get a racial at will, and can choose from one additional at will from between...

Heroes of Neverwinter as 5e Preview?

Hey Jester! Agreed there is some overlap in the space around feats. I do like them as a possible "add-on" to swap or enhance customization, increasing replay-ability. There is also certainly the issue of "scope creep" when everything inherent to design REQUIRES some kind of statistical...

Legends and Lore - Nod To Realism

I think what you're calling out here is EXACTLY what I'd like to see in a future edition. An add-on component to the core raw which you can flex to your taste, that gives the DM the right to affect the narration, and in turn the players earn benefits that allow them to affect the narration or...

Legends and Lore - Nod To Realism

Nod to realism thoughts: I'd also like to add the discussion a thought about "tier of play" and "style of world". For example, heroic should ABSOLUTELY feel more difficult and gritty than Epic per se. It's difficult to cross-over realism to "god-battling" and "world-ending" epics every time...
