D&D 4E How do you feel about 4E right *now*? (week of 1/21/08)

Thumbs up, though I've already identified one make/break point: 1-1-1-1. If houseruling that to 1-2-1-2 is obscenely difficult because of the way the rules intertwine, then I'm not playing. Otherwise, I think I'll be cool with the game.

D&D 4E 4E: The day the game ate the roleplayer?

While I like 3.5e a lot, it really didn't adequately support a lot of forms of 'rewarded obstacles' beyond combat, traps, and I THINK environments. Simple guidelines, like 'a CR 5 encounter involves X number of DC Y rolls, with Z consequences,' or, heck, even a discussion about what types of...

D&D 4E 4E: The day the game ate the roleplayer?

Wow. Merlin, great quote, good points.

Rules that still feel unneeded (to me)

Personally, I like these three elements (I have issues with others). Second Wind and Healing Surges makes me eager to try a low-magic game with no regular healers, and still have some way to keep some of the dramatic pacing people like to see in games.

Bryon: You're saying it's better for a game not to have a rule for something than to have a rule you can alter if you want? Really?

    Diagonal wonkiness scenarios

Kuonji: The TT campaign I'm in, with 9th level gestalt characters, movement is still vitally important. We might have a lot of it, but knowing when (and where) we can charge, single moves, reach... there have been plenty of times when we come 5' short of where we want to go, or have to figure...

Camping: It does a body good!

I'm reminded of LotrO, which has the (rather brilliant) mechanic that hit points don't represent damage, but 'spirit.' That is, as you fight, you loose hit points because you are demoralized... the fight goes out of you. Minstrels and champions can 'heal' you... not by closing wounds, but by...

    Diagonal wonkiness scenarios

The look on my players' faces when a monster uses wonkiness to sidestep some logical formation they've set up will be priceless. So will their abandoning of ever attempting to imagine the gamemap again.

    Diagonal wonkiness scenarios

re: 'but you can organize the map to prevent these strangenesses' ... The last thing I really need, as a GM, is to be sitting there figuring out how to bend/fold/mutilate a map to prevent the gamesystem from doing stupid things.

Has Monte Cook made 4th ed Unnecessary?

Well, there's also the point that what edition of D&D is NECESSARY?

    Gritty gone?

'Ancient Inventions' is one of my favorite books. Ancient Roman obstetrics equipment was unmatched until this century or so.

    Fly is out?

Yes, but note that the broomsticks are items, and that the vast majority of their use is limited to Quidditch, with an occasional plot exception. The vast majority of 'play,' none of the main characters fly. Granted, in the last movie, adults apparantly fly quite often, but again, it's one scene.

    Gritty gone?

It's not really the power of magic so much a matter of fluff and descriptive element. There's a flavor difference between someone punching a boulder and splitting it, and a wizard intoning shuddering words of power and splitting a boulder. Power level is a separate topic.

    Gritty gone?

Low magic appeals to me, and I'm curious to see how that will work. Also, the 'tier' thing means I can stick to whatever-the-hell-ter 1-10 is. One thing that might be interesting is only allowing spell classes as Cross-trained options, not full classes. But we'll have to see how the rules work...

    Nonhuman noncombatants?

It's occurred to me to wonder if there are any werebears out there who would go 'you know, the world would be better if EVERYONE was LG' and went on a biting crusade. As I envision it, there would then be a bloody war with the OTHER LG folks (some also werebears) who think this is a terrible idea.

    Dogs

A minor point, to be sure, but anyone think dogs should have some sort of racial ability to be more useful with Handle Animal? I'm thinking of something like: If the dog regards a character as its master (raised the dog, otherwise spent a lot of time with the dog) and the master is trained in...

    Detect Evil on an Embryo

Well, by that reasoning, Snap, wouldn't the chimera have imprinted on the warhorse? Hmm. Interestingly, chimera have an Int of 4. Juuuust intelligent enough to have morality, but... going to be rough trying to rear it right.

How Would You Design Fourth Edition?

My main focus would be races: Races all 'sum positive.' Each race gets a number of race feats and options, some of which are unique to the race; the goal is to let you play on different aspects of the race, and to make a dwarven cleric have options distinct from an elven cleric. Over...

    Where are the rapiers?

Personally, when I envision a rogue? A rapier is not at all involved. If I hadn't seen 3.5e, and someone asked me what 'class' should use a rapier, I'd say 'lightly armored fighter, maybe some sort of swashbuckler.' A rapier is for fighting directly. Rogues are not about fighting directly...
