What Core Class was actually fun to play

Well, there's one really really really good bard trick. Haste. Haste can practically double every meleers damage. That really really doesn't suck. Add in UMD to use lots of magic, various perception skills like a rogue, casting that combines healing and arcane, ability to wear chain shirts...

The Myth of the Bo9S's Popularity

Regarding fighters and 'I swing a lot.' The only good exception I know of is a really well-built spiked chain specialist, who trips everything, constantly. They are very scary. Generally, though, shields, simple weapons (spears, sigh), thrown weapons, and generalized fighters all pale next to...

Why do Combatants Circle Each Other?

It's easier to change movements than to move from a standing start. Easier to dodge when someone attacks, easier to lunge when you're already sidling. No idea how I'd incorporate this into D&D, but one could argue the Scout already does.

What Core Class was actually fun to play

The problems with paladin: Healing, but not a lot. Spellcasting, but not much. A really cool mount, but not enough feats or abilities to do much with it. Good BAB, but no special combat abilities. High saves, but no special save effects (like Evasion or Mettle) Only time I'd ever play a...

The Myth of the Bo9S's Popularity

Well, I liked the idea of Bo9S, but I hated the implementation. That could be a response they are working from... But as for 'oh, sales figures aren't high because Bo9S came out a while ago,' I'd point out that a lot of the books that did better also came out a while ago, and in a few cases...

What Core Class was actually fun to play

See, this is why I'm hugely in favor of combat balance being bolted into the system at the outset; I never have to worry about being 'useless' in combat, if that's what the group is in the mood for, and can devote my focus to making an entertaining, interesting character. On the other hand...

    Balancing E6

Consider human, in E6, to be functionally like having 3 bonus feats: one regular bonus feat, and then two 'bonus skills' feats (since over 6 levels you get a total of 9 extra skill points) Regarding pixies et al... might be worth coming up with a 'race cost' on a per-monster basis. I suspect LA...

What Core Class was actually fun to play

I also think some buffs are more fun than others, though this is a taste thing. For example, giving everyone in my group flight, or invisibility, or waterwalking, haste? Those are fun buffs. +1 to attack, +1 saves vs. fear? Boring as dirt. And annoying to track, particularly once you have a...

What Core Class was actually fun to play

Pretty much, I'm with everyone else. I'll also add that as a DM, the list also bothered me; I hated feeling like a jerk to the rogue because I was using undead or plants or constructs. I hated trying to massage the game and justify to the players why they want to march ahead rather than reclaim...

Stupid feat naming: Does it really matter that much?

Yeah, I confused this argument for the reverse: 'the book has fluff names that don't make sense but players can jot down a more sensible name.' My bad!

Stupid feat naming: Does it really matter that much?

Sir Hardin: I have players that forget what to roll for Initiative, consistently, even after playing for months. Yes, it's written on their character sheet. Sure, 'real' gamers shouldn't have a problem, but if the goal is at all to rope in new players, setting the bar low is a better idea...

    E6: The Game Inside D&D

Take care, Ryan, and thanks bunches! Give the tot tickles from us.

Stupid feat naming: Does it really matter that much?

Lauded? I've seen several threads in various places that quest cards are going to appeal to retarded children who only play MMOs and will be the end of civilization as we know it. I wouldn't draw any broad inferences from how people react; it seems to be all over the map, from what I can see.

I've reversed my stance on dragonborn and tieflings

No. Vain hope in preventative editting. The point isn't that people can't conceive of it, it's the experience of the yahoos who inevitably do such concepts, badly. It's almost always a red flag, and after being 'open minded' and suffering for it dozens of times, yes, sorry, eventually people...

I've reversed my stance on dragonborn and tieflings

It's not that 'anti-evil' crowd can't handle them properly, is that the 'omfg I'm so darq' crowd have the creativity of a grapefruit, think that a cape will piss off daddy, and are about as creepy as Count Chocula. When I see exceptions, I am very happy.

I've reversed my stance on dragonborn and tieflings

Relique: I think the point is that folks shooting for evil and dark end up whiny broody nitwits.

Stupid feat naming: Does it really matter that much?

Yes, but what does Solar Purity have to do with the feat? That's the thing. I can't think of a single example, in the real world, of 'gold' being used descriptively to suggest malleability. That's just not how it's used to evoke a response.

Stupid feat naming: Does it really matter that much?

If 1% of the feats have weird nonevocative names, I won't care much. Once you get to about 10%, it'll start annoying me. Much more than that, and I'll start weighing it into the 'do I really want to play this' equation.

    Rainbow Ray vs Scorching Ray

Er. Der. I meant saves. :/ Which... I guess they don't get? Nevermind, I'll go stand in the corner.

    Rainbow Ray vs Scorching Ray

Higher level spell also means able to pierce spell resistance better. As for me, no, because I've never seen Rainbow beam. What book is it from?
