Can a once a month game work?

Yes it works fine. I would suggest that you try and finish at an appropriate point, rather than in the middle of something. Also, starting the session with a summary of the previous sessions is helpful.

Once per day non-magical effects destroy suspension of disbelief

Beautiful. I haven't laughed so hard in days. Thanks :D

    Female opinions, please

No. By the looks of this thread, it is a common reaction :)

    Female opinions, please

I am not a female, but D&D4e was the first RPG that my wife has ever felt confident enough to offer to DM (she has RPGed for 10 years). She found the books to be well organised, more explicit as to how to create adventures and run them, and she was inspired by the heroic tone.

    Dexterity or Strength for attacks?

Most of the Rogue's Powers are Dex based, including the At-Wills. So you use your Dex rather than your Str. This doesn't apply for you melee base attack though which remains Str based.

    OGL Cloning 4e?

Personally, I would be very cautious of such an idea. Leaving aside the merits of the arguments, it could bring down a world of hurt on you. If one thing about being a lawyer has taught me is is that everyone looses in litigation, unless you are big enough to soak the costs from the outset.

    Favourite D&D Ruleset

People seem to be statting their preference without comparing it to or attacking other editions. Therefore it lacks the "war" part.

    Favourite D&D Ruleset

This seems to be a common feeling amongst 4e supporters. Until 4e, 1e was may favourite version of D&D. However, I feel that 4e is the first time that they have maintained the spirit of 1e whilst updating it with modern game design.

Pramas on 4E and New Gamers

FWIW it is only 6 Attack numbers against 4 Def. However, what is more important is that each Attack works the same way in 4e. You don't have auto success attacks, Attack roll attacks and resisted by Saving Throws attacks. This is one reason why 4e is very streamlined in comparison to its...

How to get a lot of minis on the cheap?

Not minis exactly but you could try this option: 1. Buy Fiery Dragon Counter Collections 1 and 2. 2. Print in color on label paper. 3. Put on foam board or cardboard. That should give you about 750 counters for about US$30. To give you a look at the end result:

4E - WotC's equivalent to the New World of Darkness?

FWIW I consider 3e to be a far bigger reboot than 4e will be. Most of the stuff we see in 4e is derived from 3e. The introduction of a Skill system, discrete powers and feats, tactical combat system, prestige/paragon classes, increased power level etc all really have their roots in 3e. So, yes...

    Smudges - All Core books

I had the same issue with KotS on the back page, which I avoided by using clear covering. I haven't had any issues with the core books.

D&D 4E How does 4E hold up on verisimilitude?

Yeah, I agree. If you played any version of D&D becuase you thought it was realistic then 4e will be much the same.

4E debut angst - more so than 3E?

No. There was at least this must angst if not more than when 3e came out. There is a whole thread on RPGnet asking this same question, which many say the same thing. There were calls that it was far too tactical, too much like Magic, not really D&D, too much like MMORPG. FWIW IMO 3e did a...

Making a simple character in 4E

To be honest, it is very similar to 3e. In 4e, choose a dwarf fighter with a great axe. Take Cleave and Tide of Iron as you At Wills, Steel Serpent Strike as your Encounter and Brute Strike as your Daily. Take Power Attack as your feat.

Are the PDFs illegal, if you own the books?

It is illegal to download illegal PDF copies of the books, even if you already own them.

My take on it all. (A Rant of sorts, feel free to ignore)

The DMG includes how to build a monster from scratch. It is quite easy to do. As such, this can be used as a basic stat block. However, it is even easier to adjust monsters by changing its level, adding templates or upgrading it to Elite/Solo status. As such, that's where the focus is.

    4E "Multi-classing": Someone please explain

3.5 does have the most flexible multiclassing system of the 2 editions, so that may be the best choice. However, as I mentioned in my post, in 4e, PCs are primarily defined by their Powers and Feats. Things like HP, Attacks, Defences, Proficiencies are much less defining. As such, with 4e's...
