Wow, the backer pledge averages at $288 :eek: That's impressive to be able to get so much money consistently from so many people. That's almost three times what Avatar Legends averaged per backer, though its offering three times as much product than Avatar Legends did.

Essentials was presented much like 2.5e 3.5e was and had close parallels to it in terms of time scale etc, so it had precedent and most assumed it was a 4.5e. We aren't seeing the same sort of parallels with these 2024 releases, hence the greater confusion as to what they should be called.

I am concerned by the amount of mechanics that are now embedded in Background. I want my PC's history to have an influence on who they are but, it seems like Background will be the most defining part of every starting character.

The existing Mistborn RPG is very well designed. The system is tailored to the IP and how the action played out in the books. It wouldn't be a good basis for a Cosmere wide RPG though and there is no doubt that more RPGers will be familiar with D&D5e, so its a sensible choice if you want break...

Its selling more than 3 times as much product as Avatar Legends, so comparisons are going to be tough. To be honest, I am leery of these massive KS these days with ridiculous number of books from a relatively new publishers for a new system and with fulfilment dates over 2-3 years away.

That's not how (good) KSs works though. If you don't have the system design locked down by the time you come to KS, then fulfilment will likely be significantly delayed. Even KS that have a locked down book can still take 18+ months to produce physical books in the current climate. They have...

As said, it can be. But based on the many past examples, 6 months is unlikely to be sufficient time to do a good job with a 5e version. We are highly likely to get a rushed and superficial reskin only in the timeframe they have given themselves.

Agree with the point generally. However, given that Avatar is both an excellent product, as you say, and had unprecedented success, I am surprised it didn't even get a nomination.

As a kid who went through that experience (a few years ago now admittedly), I don't see the issue. What you describe is part of what makes RPGs so fulfilling. Sure, RPGing won't be for everyone, but no hobby is.
