Check Out This Conan Character Sheet (Pad)

The system is functional but overwrought, which Modiphius has been trying to unravel by stripping it back with each iteration. To give an example, the base dice mechanic includes elements of both roll under (roll low) as well a variable dice pool system to meet and beat a target number of...

RPG Evolution: Why the New D&D Board Game is a Big Deal

It did and seems to be using a system like D&D much more than the latest offering.

Congratulations to the 2020 ENnies Winners!

In comparison, I thought this year's winners were actually representative of the wider hobby with a strong focus on quality. Sure, no one is going to know them all, especially as they have to be released in the last 12 month, but most RPGers are going to know a good number given they all have a...

Investigate Tales from the Loop in the Starter Set

The Alien Starter set doesn't include full PC Creation rules, and neither does the Tales from the Loop Starter set. The two sets are similar except the Alien one has more given its a bigger and more complex game. The rulebook is bigger, the adventure is bigger, there is more dice, and there are...

Played It Review of Ryuutama Natural Fantasy Role Play

Yes and no. The bulk of D&D's mechanics are geared toward combat and that action is rewarded. So, whilst individual players can roleplay however they wish, D&D itself cannot be said to have no influence in setting the tone in which it is played.

Played It Review of Ryuutama Natural Fantasy Role Play

Agree, though you can also focus on non-human like foes in D&D too. Ryuutama does have a different tone from D&D. It has more whimsy, greater focus on nature, and a lot of concepts and archetypes not found in D&D. As a result, the two games play differently. My only point is it’s not the...

Played It Review of Ryuutama Natural Fantasy Role Play

This is common misunderstanding of Ryuutama. Despite the lighter tone in the art, setting and magic, combat remains a big part of the system including harvesting sellable parts from monsters that are killed. Almost as much as D&D IMO. It can be quite gritty both in terms of surviving violence...

OSR Review of Mörk Borg, a Doom Metal Album of an OSR RPG

In some ways that will be subjective. However, I was impressed by how readable the book is with all the layout changes. You can see detailed runthroughs of the interior on reviews on YouTube if you have concerns.

OSR Review of Mörk Borg, a Doom Metal Album of an OSR RPG

With a little hacking, yes. Mork Borg is similar to the Black Hack. It has OSR roots but has evolved them to make for a more streamlined system. But it remains eminently hackable.

Cubicle 7 No Longer Producing The One Ring and Adventures in Middle Earth

The one thing I will say about MERP is that it recognised that ME was all about magic items. It went so far as to include the PCs finding a magic medallion in the gutter on the way through Minas Tirith in the opening box text for Palantir Quest. Class.

Cubicle 7 No Longer Producing The One Ring and Adventures in Middle Earth

You obviously did not read this post before you decided to try and turn into "MERP is the best ME RPG ever" thread. Just above your post is an explanation that the licence remains with SG and SG have said that TOR will continue given how successful and well received it has been. C7 has just...

    Modiphius’ Latest License: Dishonored

Though they share the same base system, the 2d20 games do differ considerably. You may be able to use material from Mutant Chronicles with stuff from Infinity, and the same for JC and Star Trek, but it would be much more difficult the farther down the spectrum of 2d20 games you go.

Get Started With World of Darkness With The New Blood Starter Pack

They are charging £5 for a quickstart preview of the game? Surely it would be better as a free preview if the intent is to get people to buy the full RPG.

    Modiphius’ Latest License: Dishonored

Cool. I played the system quite a bit and had the opposite reaction. Familiarity does help speed things up but the issues only became more obvious with time. I haven't played JC though, and it may be by stripping the system right back to bare basics, they revealed the system underneath. However...

    Modiphius’ Latest License: Dishonored

See my response above. It just has too many parts that do the same thing or similar things (number of dice & target numbers, momentum & hero points, how damage works to name a few) often in not particularly intuitive ways. IMO it needs an overhaul to bring its systems in line and avoid this echo...

    Modiphius’ Latest License: Dishonored

I find it to be a confusing mess of mechanics, with too many resources overlapping each other. It feels like its over-designed in order to make you think that there is more going on than there should be. I haven't checked out John Carter, which may be better as its simpler, but I have checked...
