Epic/High fantasy game for a one-shot introductory game

Another recommendation for Fabula Ultima. If they’re brand new to rpgs, you might consider trimming out some of the mechanics concerning bonds, particularly for a 1-shot (depends on how comfortable they are with rp’ing). Savage Worlds could work, but I’ve found the system is a little hard for...

    How often do you play?

I have 3 online groups that I play or GM with that typically meet bi-weekly for 2-hour sessions but typically I’m playing at least one of those per week. Then I have a long running live group that meets about every month-and-a-half for marathon 6-8 hour games.

So, what was the deal with Zelazny's second Amber series sucking so badly?

I think my biggest disappointment with the second Amber series was that it left me wanting more, and sadly we would not get that.

    Dragonbane general thread

I’ll be running my first Dragonbane session here soon! A couple of gear questions I have for veteran players: Is there a discernible difference between large and small shields, other than the durability rating? I couldn’t seem to find any explanation in the rules. And with music instruments...

    Underrated RPGs

Right… and we used Method 2 for the few games we played. I think I just wanted “point buy” and even tried to hack one in but decided it wasn’t worth it.

    Underrated RPGs

Yeah it’s unfortunate that a cool game with a lot of potential was practically dead on arrival. And to further elaborate on the character creation… I thought it was fine for helping a new player make a character for the first time, particularly if you had no preconceived notions. But a lot of...

The D&D 4th edition Rennaissaince: A look into the history of the edition, its flaws and its merits

The bigger numbers tend to be slower for players to Math out, as Tigris above me mentioned. Aesthetically I don’t like when the bonuses start to near or exceed the size of the die I’m rolling (ie, a d20). The range to hit might be the same but in some way it “feels wrong.” In my home brew...

The D&D 4th edition Rennaissaince: A look into the history of the edition, its flaws and its merits

I backed the original 13th Kickstarter hoping it would be the successor to 4e, but I ultimately gave it a pass because it had 3 bit flaws for me: The flexible attacks and “dumbing down” of martial classes The massive hit point and damage inflation as you leveled. I didn’t like such extreme...

Shadowdark: tips for a new GM?

I’m not familiar with those supplements, but they do look interesting! I’m not sure how you currently determine creature weight for other game systems, but most of the Shadowdark creatures have direct D&D analogs, so if you’ve already got weight classifications for them that might be a start.

How important is it to you or your players for characters to feel "overpowered"?

I’ve found that this varies greatly from player to player, however I think most don’t necessarily want to feel overpowered. However, what most don’t want to feel is weak or ineffective; they want to be competent at the role they’ve chosen.

Shadowdark: tips for a new GM?

I just ran my first 2 sessions of Shadowdark and our group had a blast. A lot has already been said, but one thing that took 5e players by surprise was no ability bonuses added to damage rolls. We’re using the real time timers for light. So far it’s worked pretty well (using my phone for the...

How many were abused due to their love of D&D, RPGs, and related items when they were young?

Fortunately no one in my immediate circle of friends suffered through anything like this, but we’d all heard of it happening to others. We were also careful to hide our gaming stuff at school because we knew about its bad reputation. Later in life I met a gamer who told me he’d only been...

WizKids Announces D&D Monster Manual Minis, Featuring New Designs

For those asking about a favorite WizKids D&D set, I’d probably pick the Witchlight set, just because there were so many unique designs and I like Feywild stuff. I also quite enjoyed many of the 50th anniversary models, particularly the 1st edition inspired designs. The new ones look pretty...

    D&D 5E (2014) 4E Cosmology

Planescape, from 2e, is me and my wife’s favorite setting, so we are in the Great Wheel club. We did, however, add the Feywild and Shadowfell to our multiverse when 4e was the current edition, much in the same way 5e eventually added them. We actually really liked 4e as a system, but largely...

    Underrated RPGs

Two recent-ish games come to mind for me: Sentinels Comics, a super hero rpg that really captured the flavor of comic-book action more so than a lot of other supers rpgs, which tend to focus more on modeling individual super powers. To its detriment, I think it suffers from a cumbersome...
