Pre-apocalypse the three major species were Human, Elf, and Dragonborn. The apocalypse event caused a resource scarcity that selected for smaller sized individuals. Eons later, the globe is dominated by their descendants: Halflings, Gnomes, and Kobolds.

Yeah, I said Young Adventurer's Guide since it looks like it will be an in character presentation of these worlds. That said, I would love an A&A or L&L style book for Eberron that covered it's development from the announcement of the Setting Search contest to today.
