    D&D 5E (2024) 3 Months in - Weapon Mastery

There is far too much design space there to make it Fighter only. They kept it out of all of the full casters which was the right move. Even the mastery feat only provides Str or Dex so is tough for the full casters to take if they want to go that way. Fighters got a lot in 2024 including...

D&D General Muscular Neutrality (thought experiment)

Oh, are we not talking D&D? Is this like a real world philosophical conjecture? I find the premise absurd then and I'm out.

D&D General Muscular Neutrality (thought experiment)

There is a conjecture that the Lady of Pain is so called and also causes pain because she believes that pain is what inspires all beliefs. The tv show 'The Good Place' tackles this idea towards the end of the show. Druids are often either neutral good, true neutral, or neutral evil and all are...

D&D General Muscular Neutrality (thought experiment)

That is really not what that word means. What is 100% freedom? We all need to eat and have shelter. People need to cooperate to that end. Good people don't compel others to help others so I think you're really out there on this.

D&D General Muscular Neutrality (thought experiment)

In the Great Wheel cosmology the evil outer planes are necessary for the multiverse. Prime Material planes are made up of the influence of the alignment and elemental planes. What would happen without the evil planes? I think there is a strong case to characterize the Lady of Pain as a...

    D&D 5E (2024) 3 Months in - Weapon Mastery

I think they are doing the job of adding mechanical weight to the different weapons which stops them from being interchangeable. I agree that it is a bit weird for shortsword and scimitar to be the best 2-weapon combo but is also fine.

D&D General The History of Alignment: Why D&D Has the Nine-Point Alignment System 4 UR Memes

I love alignment both for characters and as the cosmology. Let players who like it use it and players who don't leave it.

D&D General Just sweeping dirty dishes under the rug: D&D, Sexism, and the '70s

That is gross but I can believe it. We are seeing a swell of that in general I think. I work in a hospital and I still cringe whenever I hear it. Which 90% of the time is preceded by 'motor' and the other 10% I can't remember but there are a couple of terms where it is correct. It is not the...

    D&D 5E (2024) Random magic item tables

I had the 'enspelled staff' on the uncommon and rare lists but had forgotten to assign numbers to them. That has been fixed.

D&D General “‘Scantily Clad and Well Proportioned’: Sexism and Gender Stereotyping in the Gaming Worlds of TSR and Dungeons & Dragons.”

Hmmm... I will need to look into this but I think our brains have a lot more neuroplasticity in adulthood than was once believed. I take your point, but I think on a physiological level it is possible. There is a lot of other things going on though. Most likely, strong protective parts that...

D&D General “‘Scantily Clad and Well Proportioned’: Sexism and Gender Stereotyping in the Gaming Worlds of TSR and Dungeons & Dragons.”

I think it can be explained by how characters gain levels. I see the levelling system as magical. Characters don't have levels from their backgrounds. They gain them when they take on their class and then only gain more when they push themselves to their limits and perform great deeds. An elf...

    D&D 5E (2024) Random magic item tables

Yeah, I am the same. I would be into a world where all of the magic items are mysterious and have good, bad, and weird effects and when recovered finding out about them is another interesting task in some way. But that would be specialized world building and would not work with the items as...

D&D General “‘Scantily Clad and Well Proportioned’: Sexism and Gender Stereotyping in the Gaming Worlds of TSR and Dungeons & Dragons.”

I actually like the original write up. I did think of autism and I could see where that could turn into caricature but it didn't read that way to me. Only if it is really leaned into. I think if they were to also be highly monotropic and only sociable with other dwarves (the latter definitely...

    D&D 5E (2024) Random magic item tables

Oh thanks for finding it. That is rather silly. Why have the spell. I guess that is just what Remove Curse is for which is also trivial after 5th level. Unless of course the party doesn't have it then it is a nuisance. None of this sounds fun to me. Either cursed should be a prominent...

    D&D 5E (2024) Random magic item tables

It says it reveals the properties of the item and there is no mention that I found in the spell or in cursed items that gives exception to this in 2024. It is actually most of the usefulness of the spell for magic items. Otherwise it is just for learning what spells are active in a creature.

    D&D 5E (2024) Random magic item tables

Yeah, but then you don't play 5e right? These tables are for 5e. In 2e or earlier I would agree with you. It's just a nuisance now. Identify requires that you have a 100gp pearl but it doesn't consume it on casting. Cursed items are so rare as to be a 'gotcha'. In "The Wandering Inn" series...

    D&D 5E (2024) Random magic item tables

I think cursed items should be intentional. They are disruptive and only serve to make the PCs cast identify. And is that fun? Ultimately I just don't like the design of any of them. I think they need to be more interesting. They are rare enough that it is easy to just make 00 a cursed item if...

D&D General “‘Scantily Clad and Well Proportioned’: Sexism and Gender Stereotyping in the Gaming Worlds of TSR and Dungeons & Dragons.”

Oh I see, I didn't do any of the playtests. I think they went out of their way to avoid making setting decisions in the PHB 2024. It does say this: "A tiefling chooses whether to embrace or lament their fiendish legacy." That sounds like a suggestion for what people are asking for.

I hate that skill. Nature is the skill of knowledge of creatures. Medicine is the skill of applying that knowledge which, in a world of magical healing, is rarely useful.
