D&D 5E (2024) Alignment, Traits, and Roleplaying bennies

Yes, so a lawful good celestial may not do anything when they are in an authoritarian realm because doing so would be, according to your view, chaotic and they may not be chaotic. But they also can't be lawful good so they just cease to be. A lawful good god also wouldn't exist because there...

D&D 5E (2024) Alignment, Traits, and Roleplaying bennies

So there are no lawful good characters who exist in an authoritarian controlled realm. Lawful goods gods have no access to that place because any influence they have would be chaotic and so against their nature. Modrons would explode due to the paradox upon stepping foot in the borders...

"Michael: You see Chidi, I can read the entirety of the world's literature in about an hour. This took me two weeks to get through."

D&D 5E (2024) Alignment, Traits, and Roleplaying bennies

The differentiation for me is that a lawful character doesn't need to work towards making the world more like where they currently happen to be living. They have a personal code of order (which might align with how they were raised or might not) and use that to make the world a more orderly...

D&D 5E (2024) Alignment, Traits, and Roleplaying bennies

Yeah, gaining it after benefiting the group works much better in D&D's framework which is essentially the rules we got for heroic inspiration in 2024.

D&D 5E (2024) Alignment, Traits, and Roleplaying bennies

That is a huge divide among people who use alignment which is probably where most of the arguments about it come from. Alignment keeps referencing 'society' while begging the question of what that society is. It just assumes, I guess, it refers to the player's society? I think the character...

D&D 5E (2024) Alignment, Traits, and Roleplaying bennies

I realize I may be starting this thread on the path to arguing about alignment but I feel strongly about the idea that lawfulness /= authoritarianism. Authoritarianism is a form of ruling which demands obedience from others and seeks to remove their freedoms. Lawfulness as an alignment is not...

    D&D 5E (2024) No Appendix N Equivalent?

You say that and yet... Lovecraft the person had terrible, harmful views. He was highly xenophobic which makes his horror stories, which are about xenophobia even more horrific. There is a realness about them that is instructive in the ways that xenophobia manifests and the harm it does...

    D&D 5E (2024) No Appendix N Equivalent?

For you or anyone else interested you can read the chapters here: https://wanderinginn.com/2017/03/03/rw1-00/ I love the audiobook but this is good for people who want to look at words I think.

    D&D 5E (2024) No Appendix N Equivalent?

The Wandering Inn! It is the first modern fantasy series I've really loved and there audio books that are fantastically voice acted.

    D&D 5E (2024) No Appendix N Equivalent?

There are 2 problems of it for me. 1. There is so much out there including lots of great movies and TV shows that inspiration can be pulled from that I don't think there is as much use for it and they would also end up leaving out so much good stuff. 2. I think it is better to not define D&D...

D&D 5E (2024) Alignment, Traits, and Roleplaying bennies

I love the tweak that was made to heroic inspiration in 2024. I've also always loved alignment throughout the editions. For me it is a handy way to help me conceptualize a character, esp. one that doesn't fit what I consider to be in line with my personal alignment (so that I can be reminded to...

D&D 5E (2024) Kobold Press posts 2024 DMG Hit Piece

I don't know if that is true. The other starter sets still exist right? And the starter sets use simplified rules right? Then I don't see a problem with using an older starting set then buying the 2024 books. They probably didn't make a new starter set at launch because that is hard to do.

D&D General Session Zero and Nobody Chose a Spellcaster

Looks fine to me. No need for extra magic items. If the game is changed to accommodate the characters then does character choice even matter? You will have strengths other parties don't have and weaknesses and that is fun to me. The only thing for me is that I have a soft rule of no duplicate...

    D&D 5E (2024) Druid Primal Order wording

It is confusing in this instance but it is probably in their style guide to use 'or' when refusing to individual checks to differentiate from doing both checks at once. In an imaginary world someone might ask if it only applies when you make both checks.

D&D General Rerolling Initiative each Round

Yep, it is dynamic specific. It allowed them to have the same feeling of planning together as a team with much less time spent. So, since that is the kind of game they wanted it worked for us. I didn't want to tell someone they have 2 minutes to plan their turn but then the next player...

D&D General Rerolling Initiative each Round

We enforce it by having everyone declare what they are doing at the beginning. And being on the honour system. It made the game much quicker for the group we had. At the time we had a couple players who had analysis paralysis so that each turn took 1-2 minutes and so add that all up and that...

D&D General Group Skill Checks (Too Many Cooks)

Most of the time I save group checks for a major scene and there will usually be partial successes available. Also, I resolve them in an order that I thinkakes narrative sense and that order can influence further checks. For example, someone succeeds on insight and is then able to inform the...

D&D General Rerolling Initiative each Round

In my last 2 campaigns we did it. It actually sped things up because we also implemented a rule to have the players deliberate on their plan at the beginning of the round. Then the turns themselves went very quickly. It was certainly more chaotic and sometimes things changed so that people...
