    D&D 5E (2024) I have the DMG. AMA!

Heroic Inspiration is even an actual mechanic for it too.

Dungeons & Dragons Has Done Away With the Adventuring Day

This is something I see on these boards sometimes and I just don't understand it. Most chapters in the published adventures are like this. So are action movies. It's just the way stories are, which okay, are manufactured but otherwise there isn't anything.

    D&D 5E (2024) I have the DMG. AMA!

It's 'parroted' because it's how the game (and stories) work. If there is no pressure or threat for them to face then just skip that part until there is a threat. There are countless stories that have time pressure and also countless repercussions for attempting to rest. The most common being...

Dungeons & Dragons Has Done Away With the Adventuring Day

The DMG doesn't say for there to be 6-8 encounters every single long rest. It's just a benchmark for what the most amount of encounters a typical party will be able to get through per long rest. A balanced adventuring day is one where the players don't know how many encounters they are going...

D&D General The 2024 PHB is the best Player's Handbook ever

I have a player at my table who didn't intend to buy any books. He was just going to use a PDF as needed and we have 2 PHBs at the table which is enough. He is more into Pathfinder and other games. After seeing how good my collector's edition looks he went out and got a copy.

D&D 5E (2024) Table of Contents for Dungeon Masters Guide Leaked

Good to keep in mind that this is a very inexpensive book. Even if there is a lot here a person isn't interested in it could still be worthwhile. The core books really should be at least $70-80. I imagine they are keeping the price low to allow for more players which is really great for the...

Dungeons & Dragons Has Done Away With the Adventuring Day

The DMG doesn't say to do that though. So you're saying not to do something no one is saying they do.

Dungeons & Dragons Has Done Away With the Adventuring Day

Every edition has the DM ultimately in charge of the narrative but on a gradient 3e is the one that steps away from that the most. We were supposed to create NPCs using PC rules. That is wild. I found the players who had the hardest time learning 5e were ones who started with 3e for this...

Dungeons & Dragons Has Done Away With the Adventuring Day

Sure, but I think they put that in there because the default play was the opposite of that. It was a step away, but it wasn't another world away.

Dungeons & Dragons Has Done Away With the Adventuring Day

I would say that 3e saw a change in narrative control that 5e reversed. It had a simulationist approach where characters made checks rather than the player describing what their character actually does. They could say that wall is stone, wet, and with handholds so it has X DC because it says...

D&D 5E (2024) Table of Contents for Dungeon Masters Guide Leaked

The 100 pages of magic items with random tables is worth the $50 to me. Plus I'm sure it is going to look great too. These core books also function like art books.

Dungeons & Dragons Has Done Away With the Adventuring Day

Yeah. The main thing that stuck out to me in 2024 is the blurb about role playing your character and how it is important to keep the fun of the entire table in mind. This is also part of the heroic inspiration mechanic. The key is that it advises players to consider the fun of everyone at the...

    D&D 5E (2024) D&D 2024 Player's Handbook Reviews

There is a saying that if you let a bad person stay at a bar then the bar becomes filled with bad people. The same will be true of D&D tables with selfish/disruptive players.

Dungeons & Dragons Has Done Away With the Adventuring Day

There are certainly atypical setups which I think is a strength of the game. In Out of the Abyss the drow are not meant to be all fought. It is actually a good lesson for new D&D players. You aren't supposed to just be able to fight and win against everything. This is valuable experience to...

Chris Perkins and James Wyatt Answer Burning Questions About the 2024 Dungeon Master's Guide

If they're in a situation where they can just rest after every encounter then I'm just going to narrate that they succeed at whatever it is and then skip ahead to something that is actually interesting, challenging, and exciting.

D&D 5E (2024) List of multiclass concepts as single class characters

Yeah it is because it represents studying which is what wizards do. As I said, it is pretty weak theming on its own but it is a choice you can make. If you also choose a background and feat to represent that you study magic that is thematically similar to being a cleric/wizard or druid/wizard.

Dungeons & Dragons Has Done Away With the Adventuring Day

I loathe reskinning. The mechanics should be tied to representing things in the story. Otherwise the game loses a lot of appeal for me. It's a really clunky and long strategy game so I only care about the mechanics as they represent ideas. If the mechanics could be anything then they don't...

Chris Perkins and James Wyatt Answer Burning Questions About the 2024 Dungeon Master's Guide

I think it depends on what you want in the game and I would also say it is campaign dependent. Making short rests quick and limiting to 2 is a good rule but then characters are going to be more similar. When the number of short rests are uncertain then sometimes the short rest characters will...

Dungeons & Dragons Has Done Away With the Adventuring Day

Yeah, me too. I had a player show interest in my game but I didn't like his character concept so I told him it wouldn't be a good fit. It was just a bit too gimmicky and a bit too mean spirited for me. I think the character was a travelling musician who had a lot of children throughout the...

D&D 5E (2024) List of multiclass concepts as single class characters

Here is a list of multiclass concepts that can be realized using single classes in 2024. Subclasses largely make this possible. Not included are backgrounds and feats which further allow blending of themes. I am not considering mechanical combos in this list. This is about being able to play a...
