D&D 5E (2024) Rules Clarification: Fighting Style Feats

It matters if the table is not using that 2014 content. I am very happy they don't have custom backgrounds in 2024 because at that point they just shouldn't have backgrounds at all because there is no choice or theme to them.

D&D 5E (2024) Rules Clarification: Epic Boon at 19th Class Level or Total Character Level?

The thing is, rules lawyers don't care about intent. They always argue for some strict literal reading of the rules that they twist for their gain. Only here they care about intent because it makes the character more powerful. Do they support different character concepts or do they just...

Dungeons & Dragons Has Done Away With the Adventuring Day

Yeah, to me it's a vibes thing. If I get the vibe that the DM is a jerk I will react differently than if I get the vibe the DM is improvising a situation they didn't prepare for and is doing their best. My response during the game would probably to try a different approach. Like maybe we let...

D&D 5E (2024) Rules Clarification: Epic Boon at 19th Class Level or Total Character Level?

She/her. Thanks for not assuming, in the future it is easier to just write 'they' if you don't know someone's gender. I don't necessarily disagree. I think a strict reading of the rules doesn't allow it but it is entirely reasonable to read them as they infer it to be allowed. Just my 2...

D&D 5E (2024) Rules Clarification: Fighting Style Feats

I can see 3 reasons: 1. Future proofing. It provides structure for them to add new fighting style feats in a simpler way. 2. Organization. Fighting styles are all in one place now and can be organized under the section of feats without requiring their own. 3. In a digital format they can be...

Chris Perkins and James Wyatt Answer Burning Questions About the 2024 Dungeon Master's Guide

Yeah, I don't need it to say '6-8' as that was confusing for people. It is probably best to just explain the concept of pacing. There were a number of confusing terms that have been changed. Passive checks used to refer to the player being passive (not actively rolling) but the character was...

Chris Perkins and James Wyatt Answer Burning Questions About the 2024 Dungeon Master's Guide

Most chapters in the adventures are designed to be completed without a long rest and have enough encounters to present a challenge to a party of 4 PCs of the level suggested in the adventure. They are not designed to be handled 1 encounter and then a long rest at a time and there are mechanisms...

Chris Perkins and James Wyatt Answer Burning Questions About the 2024 Dungeon Master's Guide

Oh okay, fair enough. I think once the new MM comes out it will sort out the encounters. There are so many new abilities which prevent movement or push around monsters that I think some of the older monsters will end up being much weaker. I'm expecting the new monsters to be a lot more dynamic...

Chris Perkins and James Wyatt Answer Burning Questions About the 2024 Dungeon Master's Guide

I think you may be misinterpreting the guidelines. Every day does not need to be the same. There just needs to be enough variation that players don't know what to expect as well as consequences for resting.

Chris Perkins and James Wyatt Answer Burning Questions About the 2024 Dungeon Master's Guide

Sure, the adventures don't have different encounters for 3, 4, 5, or 6 players but that's a bit of a reach to say they weren't balanced which is now saying something different than not following the adventuring day. The chapters were designed to be a series of encounters all done before a long...

Chris Perkins and James Wyatt Answer Burning Questions About the 2024 Dungeon Master's Guide

Yeah. I actually think it's best to not print guidelines and math for it because it is common sense. If you rest after 1 encounter then the adventure is easy. If you can't rest for a while it is harder. It would be nice to have a section about the effect pacing has and tips to increase the...

Chris Perkins and James Wyatt Answer Burning Questions About the 2024 Dungeon Master's Guide

I only play published adventures. All of them, with the exception of overland travel sections, use the adventuring day for each chapter. The majority of the time there is a blurb at the beginning of the chapter about what happens if the PCs choose to take a long rest. It varies but is often...

D&D 5E (2024) Rules Clarification: Epic Boon at 19th Class Level or Total Character Level?

That's what I'm saying though. People just going for theme and not thinking about how to best make combos are going to have a bad time with multiclassing.

D&D 5E (2024) Rules Clarification: Epic Boon at 19th Class Level or Total Character Level?

I think even that is not actually very good once we hit 6 fighter/5 barbarian the 5th level of barbarian is basically a dead level and a level 11 fighter would be much better. Multiclassing is clunky and having it in the game constrains the design of classes b/c they need to think about the...

D&D 5E (2024) Rules Clarification: Epic Boon at 19th Class Level or Total Character Level?

If level on its own refers to character level then why does multiclassing have a rule that allows cantrips to upscale with character level?

D&D 5E (2024) Rules Clarification: Epic Boon at 19th Class Level or Total Character Level?

Because of how the tier system works in 5e doing even (or near even) splits for multiclassing results in a very weak character. A level 4/4 character is level 8 and doesn't even have a 2nd attack or 3rd level spells. The same is true for character combinations that don't have powers that get...

D&D 5E (2024) Rules Clarification: Epic Boon at 19th Class Level or Total Character Level?

Yes, the multiclass rules specify that the unspecified "level" requirements of cantrips apply to total levels for multiclass characters but they don't specify that this is true of feat prerequisites. A point in favour of it is that multiclassing is complicated but the multiclassing rules are...

D&D 5E (2024) Rules Clarification: Epic Boon at 19th Class Level or Total Character Level?

I agree that it is ambiguous. For me it is the wonkiness that one 15/4 character has an epic boon while the other does not that makes me hate it. That, and I believe a strict reading of the rules also does not allow it. People who multiclass either do so just looking at theme and end up with a...

D&D 5E (2024) Rules Clarification: Epic Boon at 19th Class Level or Total Character Level?

Cantrips gain potency at higher levels. They don't specify the class. The thing that allows multiclass characters to gain the bonus before reaching those class levels is the part in the multiclass rules that specify it. There is no such rule for feats.

Dungeons & Dragons Has Done Away With the Adventuring Day

While you're not wrong about the need for social skills, depending on what you mean by 'community' I think you're quite off there. Most people are having a great pro-social time playing D&D in their homes never to argue with someone on the internet about it. Are they part of the D&D community...
