That's a railroad. "You can create the fiction, so long as you create the correct fiction that I the DM have set forth." The limitation as @pemerton put forth wasn't a limitation. D&D tropes and cunning INCLUDING the 1e thief doesn't set a limitation on the fiction, because that still applies...

Yeah. The original dual lands had combinations for every two color combo in Magic. Green/white was savanna, green/red taiga, black/blue underground sea, and so on. There were 10 dual lands and I used to have multiple sets of 40 way back in the day. Wish I had kept all my old cards, because...

Have you never received useless Guidance before? I have.

Gee, if that's the limitation, then you ARE doing the rule wrong in your own game. I already quoted to you from the PHB what the 1e thief means by cunning. It's the cunning ability to take things. The tertiary ability to read runes has nothing to do with the 1e thief being cunning. So if...

That suggests to me that you didn't read the spell Guidance. Guidance means aid or information aimed at resolving something. You know, what Guidance the spell does when it gives you a bonus to help you resolve an ability check.

So what are the built in limitations to Cunning Explorer, because you haven't given any. I could tell you what the limitations to D&D wizards are, but you already know them.

What I said and what you said aren't in conflict. You... 1) Allowed the use of that skill. 2) Stated that it was not only deception, but also keen insight. Where am I telling you that you are wrong? I'm just pointing out keen insight not only applies to runes, but the construction of the...

This isn't D&D. It's a game where if a skill makes sense to use in a situation, you can use it. By adding keen insight to the much more commonly used meaning of deceptive to one's gain, you've made it apply to just about every situation.

Because he quoted the definition he uses and the rule was posted upthread. If the skill makes sense to apply to a situation, it can be used. That skill makes sense to apply to just about everything. Keen insights and/or deceptions work very, very, very often in just about every circumstance

Yep. It's a god ability in your game as it applies to pretty much everything. Want to climb a mountain? I have great insight into climbing it due to cunning explorer. Want to talk someone into ratting out his boss? Cunning explorer! Want to win at cards? Cunning explorer! Want to carve a...

No, but that's also a non-exhaustive list. The 1e PHB also says this under thief. "Thieves are principally meant to take by cunning and stealth." Cunning and stealth are meant for taking, because you can deceive someone into giving you their goods or into leaving goods open to your theft...

Yes it was. It doesn't change that that section is still pure skill, but it was in the portion he quoted. The skill portion constrains the interesting narrative portion, though. It has to be an interesting narrative dealing with skill.

But not all three for everything. Cunning has nothing to do with runes. The usage of the word is incorrect. You can't deceive the runes to get your way, but I absolutely believe that you ran it that way.

I don't, because there are a bunch of ways to try and find a cleric. One player might ask around town. Another might walk the streets looking for a temple. A third might not think it that important and just hang around the bar half keeping an eye out for a cleric that walks in. And so on...

Those are not the same. With the cook the encounter is not directly tied to the lockpicking roll at all. It doesn't even make much sense since a successful attempt makes more noise than a failed one does. With the perception failure, not noticing the cat is directly tied to perception...

Why not? Why can't we in the middle of the game negotiate a change in a rule or rules that we don't like and still be playing Dune? A change is a change is a change. There's nothing sacred about only changing one rule before the game that makes it still be Dune, but agreeing to change that...

In my game I like to keep questions to a minimum. I don't want to hear, "Is there a cleric in town?" Instead I want to hear something like, "I'm going to ask around town for a cleric." I want something that will move the narrative along, not a Q&A session.
